Maggie Wheeler, who guest stars as Linda, and who would be a recurring minor character, was a finalist for the role of Debra. Ray Romano and Phil Rosenthal lobbied for her, but CBS thought her character to be too ethnic.

Ray: You know I read somewhere where the happiest marriages are the ones where the man is smarter.
Debra: (sarcastically) Oh, guess who wrote that... (edit) Debra: There's more than one kind of intelligence, Ray.
Frank: That's right. There's STREET SMARTS! (edit)

In the opening sequence of "Standard Deviation", Ray offers to rub Debra's feet instead of doing another chore. He takes her black socks off and throws them on the floor, under the table. The socks can be seen for a few shots, in the same spot, after Robert comes in. At one point, however, one of Debra's black socks can be seen on the couch in the middle, and in the next shot, the sock has been removed.
(edit)
This episode's meal is meatloaf with mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes.
(edit)
This episode's dinner dish is a bowl of beans with cheese and onions.
(edit)
Debra said, "...smarter than me." Ray corrected her by saying, "...smarter than I." But then later Ray said, "...smarter than her." instead of the correct way: "smarter than she."
