Fannie Flagg is from Birmingham, Alabama; a fact that has defined her professional career. Fannie always wanted to write, but because of her struggles with dyslexia, she was embarrassed to show her writing to anyone. Instead, Fannie turned to acting. She landed small roles on TV before being cast on Candid Camera. Throughout the 70s she had small roles on TV and in film. She even starred on Broadway. In 1978 she entered a writing contest which she won. Her story was from the perspective of an 11-year-old girl, which successfully hid her spelling problems. When a publisher approached her about expanding the story into a novel, she was appalled that someone might discover her secret. Fortunately, the editor proved to her that "editing" was all she needed. Fannie began to write. Her first novel was Coming Attractions. From there her writing career took off. Fannie's books are in-depth and humorous portrayals of life in the south. Her second novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, garnered her national success. It was also converted into a successful film. Since then, she has written more novels and continues to make appearances on TV and in film. Fannie Flagg is from Birmingham, Alabama; a fact that has defined her professional career.
