Crichton is dreaming that he is back on earth with his girlfriend – Alex. She reveals she has got a scholarship on a medical programme far away. As a result she thinks they should "take a break". Crichton is just hiding an engagement ring beneath the bed when a sudden shock wakes him up. Moya has suddenly gone into starburst thinking she had heard another pregnant Leviathan giving off a signal in distress. Once there, however, there isn't even a Leviathan in sight. Meanwhile all the guys discovered that they had interesting sexual dreams during the night. Then a Delvian woman, Tahleen, gets in contact and reveals that she faked the signal because she wanted to get in contact with Zhaan.

Crichton, Aeryn and Zhaan go down to the planet, where the missionary ship of the Delvians has permanently landed, to meet Tahleen. They go to their temple where they are given resources to restock food. Zhaan is unhappy at Tahleen, it is revealed that the guy's dreams from last night originated with her, but also that Zhaan received a dream, which was "bitter". Tahleen wants a secret from Zhaan on how to escape the madness brought on by Delvian powers. Zhaan says there is no secret to how she survived the madness, she just did. Then Tahleen is distracted by Crichton, and starts to alter his childhood memories to give him a fear of water. Tahleen offers to teach Zhaan these powers but Zhaan just tells her to put Crichton back as he was. Back on Moya D'Argo suspects that the Delvians are up to something.

Crichton meets the insane Tuzak, who warns him that Zhaan is in danger. Meanwhile a Delvian called Hasko is expelling Aeryn from the temple. Crichton goes to see Zhaan about it and she says she has asked her to leave and wants Crichton to help her with a decision. She then gets Tahleen to show Crichton parts of the dream Zhaan had last night, the one about her last lover. The lover was called Bitaal, Zhaan murdered him and that was why she was imprisoned. Zhaan then informs him that she told him about this, as Tahleen wants her to help them regain power on Delvia from the Peacekeepers, which would involve death, and she wants Crichton's judgment.

They want Zhaan to give part of her soul to them in "Unity" to help them overcome their madness and defeat the Peacekeepers. Meanwhile on Moya, Aeryn, Rygel and D'Argo know something weird is up and decide to go back down to the planet. Hasko, Lorana and Tahleen discover this and Tahleen orders them to distract them so they can convince Zhaan to go in "Unity" with her and make her more powerful. Lorana then walks in on Crichton making herself appear like Alex. She makes him remember fake memories where Alex was in the space programme too, in the same ship as co-pilot when they got sucked into the wormhole.

Zhaan seeks advice from the insane Tuzak. He says that if Zhaan helps Tahleen it could bring death, but it could also free Delvia. Aeryn and D'Argo prepare to go down to the planet, leaving Rygel as backup on Moya. But then Aeryn suddenly gets convinced that her rifle has fallen apart, D'Argo thinks Peacekeepers are on board and have captured his son and Rygel thinks he has shrunk to a tenth of his

In the Temple Zhaan goes into "Unity" to show Tahleen how to defeat the madness, but she steals it from Zhaan's soul instead, leaving Zhaan red eyed and insane. Crichton then finds her and finds out what happened. He tries to convince her to try again to control her impulses but she renders Crichton mute with pain. Crichton then runs off to find Tahleen, but gets sidetracked by Lorana masquerading as Alex, who tries to seduce him. Pilot then gets in touch before anything happens and shows him how everyone on board is going insane.

Crichton goes to have a talk with Tahleen and tells her to put everyone back to normal. When he leaves Tahleen, tells Lorana to incapacitate him even if it destroys his mind. She reveals that the "Unity" with Zhaan had not managed to quell the insanity inside of her. Lorana, as Alex, finds Crichton and convinces him through altering his memories that they are married. She the makes him promise to put their marriage vows before Zhaan. Meanwhile insanity overcomes Tahleen again and she murders her father, Tuzak. Zhaan meanwhile is going to go into "Unity" with Tahleen again so she can kill her.

Lorana shows her true self to Crichton and reveals she has tricked him into believing her to be Alex. She says looking into his mind has convinced her she doesn't want to do this and that she thinks that if Zhaan looks into Crichton's mind she will become sane again. Hasko has meanwhile revealed the trick to those on Moya, but convinces them not to invade.

Lorana tells Tahleen that Crichton and Zhaan have fled so that she leaves her meeting place with Zhaan. Crichton then meets Zhaan there as she comes to meet Tahleen. He convinces her to share "Unity" with him. In "Unity" he shows Zhaan her peaceful side and helps her build it up again and overcome her insanity and rage. Then Crichton goes to chop down their sacred tree to destroy the temple. When Tahleen tries to attack Crichton mentally Zhaan protects him. The "Unity" with Tahleen her raised her to a tenth level Pa'u, able to protect others. As she leaves Zhaan leaves her Pa'u garments feeling no longer a Pa'u.
