Ever wonder what life would be like if a new form of sea life began to appear in locales all over the earth? "Surface" is an expansive drama and undersea adventure that centers on the appearance of mysterious sea creatures in the deep ocean -- and tracks the lives of four characters. They are: Laura Daughtery (Lake Bell, "Boston Legal"), the young oceanographer who discovers the secret; Dr. Aleksander Cirko (Rade Sherbedgia, "Snatch"), the government scientist who tries to keep things under wraps; Rich Connelly (Jay R. Ferguson, "Judging Amy"), the Louisiana insurance salesman who loses his brother in a suspicious diving accident; and Miles Barnett (Carter Jenkins, "CSI: New York"), the young boy who brings one of the creatures ashore. The mystery ensnares a spectrum of people, including naval officers in the South Antarctic Sea, a family in North Carolina, scientists from the Oceanographic Institute in Monterey, and fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico. The seemingly innocent creatures they find are beautiful, and kids may even want to play with them -- but is there something more to them? One thing's for sure – they're full of surprises as viewers embark on this journey to discover what might be lurking in the sea. "'Surface' is entertainment for all ages in the tradition of 'E.T.' and 'Close Encounters,'" said Josh and Jonas Pate, the series' creators and executive producers. "It will have action, suspense, thrills and heart as we track the fantastic into the familiar." The Pates continued: "We'll follow the teenager as he raises the sea monster in a suburban garage. We'll admire the young dedicated oceanographer as she takes unbelievable risks to get to the bottom of the mystery.   I am a very good fan of surface, hell i yelled giddy every time i see nimrod. but it should not come back and heres why. it was said that the creator intended surface to be of one season. the plot of the show is to find out about these new and weird creatures. then we find out the larger plot. to use the creatures trigger a tsunami and kill of the entire world, after taking samples from every single living land animal that could be found. perfect the human cloning and advance evolution technology almost. and then hide out in the center of the earth, and wait for the waters to settle. come back to the surface, ironically, and re start the world. the ultimate human turned god dream. the waters came, almost everybody died, every technology in the world was destroyed and world peace was achieved, with only a handful of humans to enjoy it. of course the main characters could not be killed, come on, not that miles could die of water, but anyways, he saved them by putting them in a church, big surprise there. the series is done. beginning. climax. end. why should it return? them four and nimrod would stop the bad guy. for what? the world is drowned. the only one who can save life is sadly and ironically is the bad guy. i have never seen that before, but it was great. why should it return then. and for what? what would be the new plot? my opinion is that should surface return it would do what many other series have done before; tarnish their own reputation. less «

I mean when nimrod healed miles and then miles kinda got a few of their abilities, a gene combination of some sort. like the electirc touch, "instinct", and im guessing underwater breathing. does anybody else think that it was just put out there and then abandoned?less «

  First They scrap Surface. I just watched Surface from beginning to end yesterday. Yeah, all in one day. It was that good. Now they leave me with these loose ends and just expect everyone to deal with it. Not to mention they did they same thing with Journeyman not that long ago. Shows just how NBC really is. At least they finished the first season of Surface, or so we think. Maybe surface was meant for 20-24 episodes but just got scraped due to ratings like Journeyman did. Both were amazing, cool shows. They need to make Surface season 2 or just a mini series to wrap things up so I can get some damn closure here.less «

  It had possibility but was cancelled despite being a great show hide « show »

  I thought this was a very good TV series and I would have liked to see it continue. It really got interesting there at the end and I really wanted to see where it was going from there. But they cancelled it. People want a weekly show they can follow, and fall in love with, Surface is cool and fun to watch. The characters are very likable and they are portrayed by likable actors. They've done a very nice job with the casting. The actors fit the roles and their acting is good. This show manages to keep you interested the whole season. If you have time you really should watch it. Especially if you love Sci-fi shows.

  Mysterius underwater fissures, sudden electrical storms, strange dissapearances of ships, a new species is found underwater and a USA goverment scientist is murdered. hide « show »

  It's more of a comment than a review: the show was quite good. I'm a really tough customer and I was sold. The only problem with it was the silly story of the boy and the "tiny poke-aquatic mammal-pet-monster", the rest was impecable.   Wow this show is amazing.Sooner or later someone will see this jewel for what it is and give it the money to come back onto air. hide « show »

  I had never heard of this show and now that i have watched it i wonder how it never became famous. It is just amazing. It is mind boggling and sweet. This thriller is unmatched by any show I have seen yet. I am deeply surprised that this show was cancelled. This show is the epitome of sci-fiction and thriller. It's intelligent dialogue is hinted with a sense of wit and the characters are such parallels of each other its hard not to be entertained. I think anyone who watches this show will find something they relate to and fascinate them. I have a feeling we have not seen the last of this show. Sooner or later someone will see this jewel for what it is and give it the money to come back onto air.

  While "Surface" may not be a beauty, it is a charmer and it deserves a look from you and a reprieve from a network somewhere. The show ran from 2005-2006 and was canceled with about average ratings, at the end of the first season after just 15 episodes. At times the short lived series waxed between weak plot twists (the whole escaping from 5000 feet under the ocean sort of lost me) and really very compelling arcs, (I liked Martha Plimton's Character (Mr. Big) and the relationship between Nim and Miles among others).
  
  Equally, the performance by Jay R. Ferguson as Rich Connelly was, at times, completely brilliant and at other times it seemed a bit forced and unbelievable. Lake Bell's character Dr. Daughtery, starts out strong and independent and then, in later episodes, begins to show signs of a female stereotype. (which was kind of a bummer) Overall, the acting vacillates between authentic and oversold. Though some, if not most, of this is probably due to the players and writers trying to find a rhythm.
  
  Having said all of that, this show, to me, had many of the marks of what could have been an interesting series. A show which, given the current global mood, would probably strike a chord with more SciFi fans today, than it did when it first aired (and it didn't do too bad then) The bottom line, "Surface" was a decent show that was struck down before its time. Had "Surface" been given another season, I think it may have found its stride and developed a strong fan base.

  An interesting show with the storyline to be so much more. Still for the sci fi fans a show to see. It's petty it ended only with one season because the story could go in many different directions.
  
  Some nice actors but nothing really special and some nice special effects but also nothing really special and stunning.
  
  I think the best thing i could say about the show is that its a very good show to see between other shows you love and have a summer break, and you'll have some good surprises in one or two episodes.
  
  See'ya sci fi fans.
