Manuel insists that his pet rodent is a Siberian hamster. However Basil is certain that the pet shop has conned the gullible Spaniard and sold him a rat - a fine thing to have running round the hotel when the public health inspector is also on the loose, Basil must find it before the inspector sees it and shuts the hotel down.
It's Basil and Sybil's anniversary and Basil has to fake his wife's illness to his friends when she storms out of the hotel and enlists Polly's help to keep up the act. Also the cook Terry and Manuel can't seem to agree on the proper way to cook paella.

A psychiatrist and his wife come to stay and Basil becomes paranoid that Sybil is sharing their intimate details. Meanwhile, a charming guest that Basil loathes has snuck a woman into his room and Basil tries to get proof of that without looking like he's flirting with an attractive Australian guest.
The disgreeable and hard - of - hearing Mrs. Richards drives Basil crazy with her complaining especially when a large amount of money is stolen from her room. Basil also must hide his winnings from betting on a horse from his wife.
