Fay was raised in Los Angeles and began going to different studio offices trying to become an actress. She finally made it big when she was cast in the lead female role in Erich Von Stroheim's movie, The Wedding March, which was made in 1928. She starred in other productions which leading men such as Gary Cooper, but is probably most identified as the heroine in the monkey flick, King Kong. She appeared in other movies of the same genre which earned her the nickname of "Queen of Scream." Her marriage to playwright-screenwriter John Monk Saunders lasted from 1928 to 1939. In 1942 she retired from movies and married screenwriter Robert Riskin. She made a brief comeback in the 50's after Robert's death, but retired for good in 1958.
In 1988, she wrote her, autobiography, "On The Other Hand."
In 1991, Wray was the guest of honor at the 60th birthday celebration of the Empire State Building.
