Emmy shortlists leaked

By Tim Surette - TV.com
July 3, 2007 at 04:58:00 PM | more stories by this author

Nominees narrowed to 10, according to Web site; Extras, Friday Night Lights in, The Tudors, The Wire out.

This year's Emmy nominations aren't due out until later this month, but screenings to narrow down the list of finalists are already under way.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences doesn't make it a practice to reveal which shows make its initial run of potential nominees. The organization only reveals the final five nominees (this year the nominees will be announced on July 19), but actually begins with a list of 10 possibilities in each category before names are whittled down to half that number.

TheEnvelope.com, a Web site run by the Los Angeles Times, specializes in all things awards show and has apparently managed to track down the Academy's top 10 choices worthy of Emmy nomination in a few categories.

According to information acquired from anonymous sources, the following shows are being considered for best drama series and best comedy series:

Drama Series / Episode being screened
Boston Legal / "Angel of Death"
Dexter / "Born Free"
Friday Night Lights / "Pilot"
Grey's Anatomy / "From a Whisper to a Scream"
Heroes / "Genesis"
House / "Half-Wit"
Lost / "Through the Looking Glass"
Rome / "De Patre Vostro"
The Sopranos / "Soprano Home Movies"
24 / "Day 6: 6am-7am"

Comedy Series / Episode being screened
Desperate Housewives / "It Takes Two"
Entourage / "One Day in the Valley"
Extras / "Daniel Radcliffe"
My Name Is Earl / "Robbed a Stoner Blind"
The Office / "The Coup"
Scrubs / "My Musical"
30 Rock / "Hard Ball"
Two and a Half Men / "Apologies for the Family"
Ugly Betty / "Pilot"
Weeds / "Cooking With Jesus"

Awards show time is also the time to make a hubbub over who got snubbed and who got in but shouldn't have. However, given that these lists are of the top 10 possibilities and not the final five nominees, some omissions are more glaring than others.

While 24 made the list after what many consider its worst season, critical darlings like The Wire, Rescue Me, and The Shield were left off. And as for period-piece dramas, the now canceled Rome made it, while Showtime's decadent The Tudors did not.

On the comedy side, The New Adventures of Old Christine couldn't shake the Seinfeld curse, and new favorite How I Met Your Mother couldn't crack the top 10.

The site also claims to have information on the acting categories, but does not have all 10 in each category. The following are the actors that TheEnvelope claims to have confirmed to be on the shortlist.

Drama - Lead Actor
James Gandolfini / The Sopranos
Michael C. Hall / Dexter
Eddie Izzard / The Riches
Hugh Laurie / House
Denis Leary / Rescue Me
Kiefer Sutherland / 24

Drama - Lead Actress
Minnie Driver / The Riches
Edie Falco / The Sopranos

Drama - Supporting Actor
Masi Oka / Heroes

Drama - Supporting Actress
CCH Pounder / The Shield

Comedy - Lead Actor
Alec Baldwin / 30 Rock
Steve Carrell / The Office
Charlie Sheen / Two and a Half Men

Comedy - Lead Actress
America Ferrera / Ugly Betty
Teri Hatcher / Desperate Housewives
Felicity Huffman / Desperate Housewives
Julia Louis-Dreyfus / New Adventures of Old Christine
Mary-Louise Parker / Weeds

Comedy - Supporting Actress
Vanessa Williams / Ugly Betty

Comedy - Supporting Actor
John Krasinski / The Office

It's important to note that the information has not been confirmed by the Academy, and should be taken with a grain of salt. Check back with TV.com on July 19 for a final list of the official 2007 Emmy nominees.

This is why I never watch the Emmy's. So many worthless or on-the-decline shows get nods over shows that are in their prime or are at least still good. Take The Sopranos. That show hasn't been good for years, yet it still makes it onto the list every year. Then there's 24, which is fresh off the heels of its worst and most ridiculously uneven season so far, yet it still gets nominated.

Meanwhile, shows like The Shield (which is one of the best shows on television by far), Battlestar Galactica (another one of the best on TV), Rescue Me (fresh off a weak season but still better than most shows on TV), and The Wire (pretty solid) get left off the list.

Ridiculous.

Michael Emerson should at least get a nomination for his role in lost!
Posted 07/13/2007 7:00am
No Jericho on the list.
Posted 07/10/2007 12:58pm
the same people every year and there's nothing special about any of them
Posted 07/10/2007 11:41am
Battlestar Galactica!!! Where the Frack are you?!
Posted 07/09/2007 6:13pm
Once again, no Lauren Graham.
Somebody on the committee must hate her!
Posted 07/09/2007 9:53am
America Ferrera / Ugly Betty

yeah she deserve it... this character is normally imposible to make entertaining and funny without making it seem cheap and wrong....
i hope she wins. *_*

Glad Hugh Laurie is on the lead actor list. What I can't understand is why Robert Sean Leonard is not on the short for SUPPORTING LEAD ACTOR. I don't watch Heroes - can't make sense of it. And really I don't think Maki deserves a supporting actor nomination.

Woo hoooooooooooooooooo
Desperate Housewives here we go!!!!!!!!!!
Felicity needs to win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Def the best pick out of those!!!!!!!!!!!!! She was amazing this season!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted 07/07/2007 5:04pm
3 Nominations for Desperate Housewives , coooooooool
Posted 07/07/2007 1:01pm
Holly bleekers...sigh. Didn't ANYONE see ER's opening episode 'Bloodline'???? Gads. It was the most finely acted episode of dramatic television I have seen EVER. Maura Tierney's backside never left a gurney and Goran Visnjic's face was covered with a surgical mask but they did a freaking awesome portrayal of characters in anquish and anticipation. Sheesh....not to mention the others...Laura Innes, Paraminder Nagra, Scott Morris and Linda Cardinelli. Sheesh.
Posted 07/07/2007 4:23am
Are they frikken KIDDING ME?!?!?! They better add Lauren Graham and/or Gilmore Girls onto there!!!! This can't happen AGAIN!
Posted 07/06/2007 4:39pm
My picks:
1 LOST "Through the Looking Glass"
2 The Office "The Coup"
3 Hugh Laurie for "House"
4 Minnie Driver for "The Riches"
5 Masi Oka FTW!!!!!
6 CCH Pounder(no idea who this is, but she's the only one)
7 Steve Carrell OR Alec Baldwin (Both are amazing)
8 America Ferrera for "Ugly Betty"
9 Vanessa Williams for "Ugly Betty"
10 John Krasinski FTW!!!
Posted 07/06/2007 4:19pm
Too much of the same old, same old. I was nice to see Dexter and Michael C. Hall, at least recognized!
Posted 07/06/2007 10:48am
HOUSE!!!!! WOOOT WOOOT HIRO IS ALSO NOMINATED!!!!! WOOT
Posted 07/06/2007 9:09am
Veronica Mars? Kristen Bell?
Sure this season wasn't amazing, but the CW/WB/UPN shows never get anything.
Posted 07/06/2007 8:00am
All Hail LOST!
Posted 07/05/2007 11:34pm
Emmies this year are a joke. No Shield really hurts badly off the list.
Posted 07/05/2007 7:16pm
So disappointed that The Shield isn't there.. especially Walton Goggins.. he deserves an Emmy for his performance this year.. and as always, Michael Chiklis deserves another one, but gets overlooked every year.
Posted 07/05/2007 5:05pm
Tough choices all would ike HOUSE to win but SOPANOS will take it all
Posted 07/05/2007 2:57pm
Michael Hogan (Col. Tigh "BSG") and Katie Sackhoff (Starbuck "BSG") should have both received nominations for the Exodus episodes of Season Three. You don't get a much better performance from any of the others on the short list. The Emmy's is b***s***.
Posted 07/05/2007 1:20pm
Glad to see the concept episodes of Scrubs and Earl got nominated.
Posted 07/05/2007 7:11am
YEAH SERIOUSLY!!!! THE LAST 2 SEASONS OF THE SHIELD HAVE BEEN THE BEST SEASONS THE LAST 2 YRS, PERIOD. EVEN WITH WHITACKER'S STAR POWER, THEY COULDN'T GET A NOMINATION LAST SEASON. AND THEN THIS SEASON, THEY AGAIN MADE THE BEST SEASON OF THE YEAR, AND THEY ARE SCREWED FOR IT??? WHY DO THE EMMIES CONTINUE TO OVERLOOK THE SHIELD? THERE MUST BE A REASON AS THEY HAVE NEVER GOTTEN A BEST DRAMA NOMINATION-EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE DEEPEST AND BEST PLANNED OUT SHOW ON TV. THANK GOD CCH POUNDER IS GETTING A NOMINATION, THANK GOD, BUT HER PERFORMANCE WASN'T NEARLY AS GOOD AS CHIKLIS'S OR GOGGIN'S WAS THIS SEASON.

I WAIT EVERY YEAR TO SEE IF THE SHIELD WILL FINALLY BE REWARDED. THIS MAKES ME SICK ONCE AGAIN.
Posted 07/05/2007 6:39am
Supernatural, totally overlooked. Good plots, excellent acting.

Dexter hasn't yet been aired in the UK. So can't comment. Used to love House but I feel it is getting a little predictable.

Have never seen Riches either but hey Eddie Izzard is another Brit - so go Eddie.
Posted 07/05/2007 6:01am
I can't believe that 24 made the list! What a terrible season. Although they are screening the first episode of the season which was outstanding, so maybe they will make their decision on that one alone. If they do, 24 is in the heat of the race. For as much as I hated season 6, I have to follow my heart; GO 24 and Kiefer!!
Posted 07/05/2007 5:58am
I have to agree with several posters here, Matthew Fox (Jack on LOST) put in his best performance ever and this season was far and above superior to last year's. I also can't understand why Battlestar Galactica is overlooked, the cast is phenomenal and the storyline outstanding.
Posted 07/05/2007 4:42am
F THAT. The Wire is the most deserving show out of any. Once again the academy gets it wrong. Boston Legal? 24 after its worst season ever? Are you kidding me? Boycott the emmys.
Posted 07/05/2007 3:58am
yeah lauren graham and battlestar galactica deserve nominations - also michael hogan and james callis from galactica...also extras being on the shortlist is top notch - most underrated comedy on television!
Posted 07/05/2007 2:12am
Always with the safe choices and/or the shows nobody watches being nominated. Yeah...sorry, I only watch the Oscars
Posted 07/04/2007 8:49pm
Kiefer Sutherland for actor = good. 24 as series = what the hell, season 6 was horrible. If Dexter doesn't sweep its categories there is no justice in the world.
Posted 07/04/2007 8:21pm
Is there, like, some rule that Galactica and Veronica Mars can't get nominated, that I don't know about...?
For frak sake, Michael Hogan needs emmy for last season!
Posted 07/04/2007 7:45pm
anyone who thinks that 24 should make it and the wire shouldn't is completely out of their mind. I'm a fan of both shows, but even I can admit that 24 does not belong anywhere near that list.
Posted 07/04/2007 7:37pm
John Krasinski! I'm happy for him. Though, I am utterly disappointed that Jensen Ackles got passed over completely. He's such a fantastic actor, who always seems to be looked over for some inexplicable reason. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope this is an oversight on the part of the news leak.
Posted 07/04/2007 7:25pm
DAMN! no gilmore girls??? HELLO lauren graham?? wtf?!?!?!?!
Posted 07/04/2007 4:55pm
the tudors is an awesome show!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted 07/04/2007 4:07pm
It's lovely to see the hands-down best TV show EVER to not make it AGAIN - NOT! (The Wire)

The Emmy's are a joke.
Posted 07/04/2007 3:18pm
Gilmore Girls? Lauren Graham?
Posted 07/04/2007 3:15pm
LOL
No Prison Break.
I dont get it.
Posted 07/04/2007 2:25pm
At least they've got one thing right and thats Dexter.
Posted 07/04/2007 2:18pm
What? No Criminal Minds or Prison Break? Let us hope this is some type of horrible oversight...
Posted 07/04/2007 1:29pm
I can't believe Supernatural isn't mentioned. Did they see Jensen Ackles in All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2. That is the best acting I have ever seen! He deserves the nod.

And tonink2255 just because CSI has high viewer numbers, doesn't mean it's worthy of an Emmy nod.
Posted 07/04/2007 1:28pm
How can "The Shield" not be nominated? I also like Anthony Michael Hall in "The Dead Zone", another person/show left off the list. This is why I haven't watched the emmys in years.
Posted 07/04/2007 1:05pm
i cant beleive csi lv or csi ny was nt nominated when they both had such great seasons with high viewing figures
Posted 07/04/2007 12:58pm
go LOST!!!
Posted 07/04/2007 12:14pm
Oh god. No nominations for the shield? Even though season 6 was the best thing on TV this year?
Posted 07/04/2007 10:32am
My predictions:
Best Drama - The Sopranos (I want Heroes to win though)
Best Comedy - The Office (rooting for Weeds though)
Best Actor Drama - Michael C. Hall Best Supporting Actor Drama - Masi Oka Best Actress Drama - Edie Falco
Best Actor Comedy - Steve Carrell (I root for Charlie Sheen every year)
Best Supporting Actor - Jeremy Piven
Best Actress - Mary-Louise Parker
Posted 07/04/2007 10:32am
24 and Kiefer Sutherland all the way
Posted 07/04/2007 10:13am
The Emmy voters are morons. It's an outrage that The Wire and Battlestar Galactica are not even considered for drama despite the fact that they are two of the best shows on television. There is no love for The Shield (CCH Pounder being the exception)despite the fact that everyone on that show is awesome.
Posted 07/04/2007 7:47am
I like Kiefer Suitherland and Hugh Laurie. What do diside.
Posted 07/04/2007 7:18am
I so hope Bones gets nominated for something...
And House totally deserves some Emmys.
