Vaudeville comics Olsen and Johnson brought their Broadway show Hellzapoppin' to television in this summer replacement for Texaco Star Theater.
Olsen and Johnson's style was loud, broad and frantic, often resembling organized chaos. Pies were thrown, clowns ran amuck, crazy props abounded, showgirls danced and seltzer was squirted. The action often spilled into the rowdy audience assembled at New York's Center Theater.
After its summer run, the show returned for two more months. Additional cast members were added, including singer Bill Hayes, comedian Marty May, Chic's daughter June Johnson and Ole's son J. C. Olsen.
