I thought this was an absolutely brilliant episode. A highlight of the series so far.
The focus on how someone who was kidnapped comes to completely trust and depend on the kidnapper (the Stockholm Syndrome) was excellently shown and acted by the actress who played Penny. A great performance and scarily realistic. The actress playing Jules also did a great job in showing how difficult it is to reach out to someone like that and try to overcome the years of conditioning of the kidnapper. There was less focus on the personal lives in this episodes but the storyline made more than up for it.
Truly amazing television...
Another strong episode. hide show
When a young girl is kidnapped the team get a tip off where to find her, what there are shocked to discover is that one of the abductors is a teenage girl who went missing many years earlier.
Again the episode was strong and as I've said before this show really gets down to everyday situations and doe's not sugar coat them like some police dramas we've had, i know the show isn't for everyone and i understand, i'm not abig fan of police type dramas but this is something different.
I'm so glad to hear this superb TV series is back for a second episode.
Ok, I would actually give this episode an 8.8, but I can't because the stupid new rating system. Off my rant now - onto the episode. The team is called in to get two kidnapped girls from their captor. One of the girls, however, has Stockholm syndrome which makes things tricky. In the end, the captor kills himself and both girls are saved. It was interesting seeing Jules actually negotiate, but she really annoys me; I don't like her character. I liked the development of Greg's character and that he's finally going to go see his son. Overall, interesting, emotional story with good character developments. Oh, if this was the finale, it definitely wasn't good enough...
An intelligence insulting waste of my time! hide show
Why bother wasting time creating a believable plot when 3/4 of the way through you have the characters do something unbelievably stupid or portray them as completely incompetent boobs. I am not even trained in swat tactics and even I could have disarmed the girl by taking the shotgun away from her ten times over. And talk about unnecessarily putting your life on the line. They portray the swat officers as too stupid to take cover when a knowingly unstable hostage is pointing a shotgun at them at point blank range. Gimme a break! Of course if they had disarmed her when they first had an opportunity, they would have had 15 more minutes of plot line to fill in. This episode was an intelligence insulting waste of my time! This is the first episode I watched. I may give it one more chance and hope that this was an isolated incident of writer incompetence.
The team is called in to a home where it is suspected that a little girl is being held, only to find two abduction victims. hide show
Penny was 8 when she was taken from her backyard. That seemed like a lifetime ago and she had adjusted to her new life with Gerald - the man who abducted her. She reads and writes transcripts on books with dark themes and suffering from Stockholm syndrome, believing that without Gerald there is no life. She goes about her daily routine - being careful not to trip the ankle monitor - when Gerald brings a new guest home. Lily is the same age that Penny was when she was abducted and when Lily unknowingly breaks the rules, Penny steps up and tries to protect her, only to be punished by Gerald.
The SRU are called in when a gas attendant manages to take down Gerald's license plate after identifying the missing girl. The team locate the house from Gerald's registration and attempt to try and negotiate with him, only to have him threaten the girl and the team if they try to gain access to the house. They try again to contact him, but when he doesn't pickup the phone, they know that going in is their only alternative. Once in, they find a strange alarm system for either keeping everything out, or keeping something in. Ed and Scarlatti went through some tunnels in the basement to track Gerald down. In the upstairs bedroom, Jules, Wordy, and Sam find Lily and Penny-who was taught to mistrust the police and trust only him. The scene is intense as it is up to Jules to talk an armed Penny down and convince her to put her gun down and leave the house safely. This was a great episode, once again filled with intense nail biting drama. The scene with Penny and Jules upstairs was amazing, especially when she started including information about Penny's past, you actually see on Penny's face the little girl she once was slowly coming back. The actors did a great job, I like Parker being all parental to Jules even though he's estranged with his own child. You felt for Jules need to save both Penny and Lily, Sam scared for Jules to the point that he was willing to put a bullet in Penny, the actor who played Gerald was really smarmy and I kinda wish they had gotten a chance to shoot a couple of rounds in him, but it isn't that kinda show. I like that it doesn't have to resort to gratuitous violence and in a strange way the show seems to have an anti-violence message. I still kinda miss the comedy bits and I wish they'd bring it back, but it's still one of my favorite shows.
