The young Antoine Doinel in The 400 Blows was not so loosely based on Truffaut's youthful self, and Doinel's release from military prison at the beginning of Stolen Kisses echoes Truffaut's own imprisonment for attempted desertion. Film critic Andre Bazin was among those who engineered his release from both prison and the military in 1952. (edit)
