  • Frasier said that if Maris was in the sun for even three minutes she'd "sear like an ahi tuna." However, in "Dinner at Eight," we learned that the smell of charred meat reminded Niles of Maris in her home tanning bed. If Maris can be exposed to UV rays in a tanning bed, why can't she be exposed to the sun's UV rays? edit »
  • Roz says she's never seen Maris before. However, this is not true. In "The Botched Language of Cranes" in Season 2, both Maris and Roz attended the hospital charity event where Frasier spoke. Although the audience did not see Maris in that episode, at one point everyone sitting at Frasier's table, including Roz, watched Maris pursue another woman at the event in the hopes of securing a seat on that woman's fund raising board. This means Roz saw Maris at least that one time. edit »
  • (Frasier, Niles and Roz have just spotted Maris who is on the same cruise as they are)
Roz: (Referring to Maris) Who wears a black dress and a veil on a cruise?
Frasier: Roz, the woman has virtually no pigmentation. Three minutes in the sun, she'd sear like an ahi tuna.

Ahi tuna (also known as yellowfin tuna) is a suschi-grade fish, which is to say it can be eaten raw. It is normally served lightly seared on the outside but raw inside, which makes the "three minutes in the sun" reference particularly apt.

  • This is the only time in the entire eleven years of Frasier that we have any direct experience of Maris. As Frasier, Roz and Martin are hiding in her bathroom, she enters. We hear her gargling and see her shadow on the shower curtain as she enters and leaves.

  • Niles is feeling down because Maris will be in Zurich instead of spending their anniversary with him. Martin fixes him a hot toddy to make him feel better. The (unusual) dark green pedestal-style coffee mugs Martin uses can be seen in the previous episode ("The 1000th Show") when Martin and Daphne have coffee at the Café Nervosa. It's conceivable that Martin liked them so much he bought them, but they are never referred to. edit »
  • Niles: (spying on Maris through the bathroom door) Oh no, she's started without me.
    Frasier, Roz and Martin: Eeew!
    Niles: Drinking the champagne.

  • Martin: I'll get us started with a couple of nice hot toddies, just like we used to make down at Duke's.
Frasier: You know, Dad, there's a recipe in this book for a hot toddy. It calls for courvoisier, chamomile tea, and a dash of framboise!
Martin: Garnish it with a few rose petals and that's just how Duke used to serve it.

  • (Roz is trying to convince Frasier to appear as a guest lecturer on an Alaskan cruise)
Roz: (pointing at the brochure) ...it says right here, Gore Vidal did two of them.
Frasier: (incredulous) Gore Vidal! He hates everything!

This alludes to the Life Cereal commercials that ran in the 70's and 80's in which little brother Mikey liked the cereal, in spite of the fact that, "He hates everything!". edit »
  • Frasier refers to Mimi as the Mrs O'Leary's cow of the predicament they are in. Mrs O'Leary's cow kicked over a lantern that was thought to be the cause of the Great Fire in Chicago in October 1871. Michael Ahern, a Chicago Tribune reporter later admitted making up the story, but many still believe this story to be true. edit »
  • Title: Voyage of the Damned
The episode title shares the same name as the 1976 Drama "Voyage of the Damned" starring Faye Dunaway. edit »
