G.I. Joe Extreme was the first totally independent animated revival of the G.I. Joe franchise. Although within the continuity of the original series, few references were made to it. Instead we see a new team of Joes operating in a post-Cold War world now racked by chaos and carnage. The Joes battled the forces of SKAR (Soldiers of Kaos, Anarchy, and Ruin) and independent mercenaries who sought to further destabilize an already unstable world.

GI Joe History
The very first G.I.Joe animation was seen in the 1982 television commercial for Marvel Comics' G.I.Joe #1. Sunbow Productions produced all of the G.I.Joe animation between 1982 and 1988.

In 1983, Sunbow produced the five-part G.I. Joe syndicated television mini-series, The M.A.S.S. Device. In 1984, it was followed up by The Revenge of Cobra mini-series. In 1985, The Pyramid of Darkness launched the daily cartoon that ran for two seasons. Sunbow concluded their run of G.I.Joe animation with G.I. Joe : The Movie in 1987.

In 1989, another fledgling animation studio, DIC Animation, animated the further cartoon adventures of G.I. Joe with their mini-series Operation: Dragonfire. DIC also animated two seasons of cartoons in 1990 and 1991. However, DIC operated on a much lower budget and the results were of a much lower standard of quality than the Sunbow cartoons.

In 1995, Sunbow produced a new G.I. Joe cartoon for the new toyline, Sgt. Savage and the Screaming Eagles. It was the first and only episode to feature these characters. The episode was came packaged with the figure, Commando Sgt. Savage, and was never aired on T.V.

G.I. Joe Extreme lasted for two seasons, airing between 1995 and 1997. There were 26 episodes in all. This show was part of a G.I. Joe Extreme launch as there was a toyline and comic series also introduced in 1995. The "... And Knowing is Half the Battle" public service announcements also returned with this series.less «
