He auditioned for his role of Federov in Earth: Final Conflict over the phone. The producers wanted to know if he could do a Russian accent and by the end of the call he got the part. (edit)
He now holds further distinction as having played at least two separate roles in each of The Outer Limits, MacGyver, Stargate SG-1, and/or Stargate Atlantis. (edit)

Garwin Sanford:(On his art work) Yeah. I've done pen and ink for years. But about five years ago, when the business slowed down here for a while, I started sculpting in clay. And I'd never worked in clay before. I've always been interested in masks and things because of theater work. I've done comittedelarte. I've done neutral mask and character mask under Wendy Gorling. Again, at that theater school. And she's amazing. She's brilliant, actually. She's a genius, as far as I'm concerned, when it comes to mask work. And under mask is where I learned to become an actor. All of a sudden, when I was under mask, I felt like "Poof," I had power and everything could free up. And it took me a little while but then I caught on and went, "Oh, right. Every character is a mask." (edit)
Garwin Sanford: (On possibly returning to Stargate) I would love to do more of these. Again, working with Amanda. And the gang. Christopher Judge. Him and I go back to a series called Booker with Richard Grieco. They had offered me a regular role to start. I wasn't sure about the series, so I said "We don't know what it is yet. Why don't we do a couple of episodes and see what we can come up with." And then they changed producers and they said "Well we have to do another one." New producers. It happened two or three times. I'd finally done about six or seven episodes as one of the investigator-kind of guys at this place. Anyway, he was in that also. So I loved working with Christopher. I loved working with Ricky. The gang is just fun. But most of my stuff was always with Amanda, of course. That's hard to take. [Laughter] It was just really fun. I love her as an actor. It's great. And I'd love to do more. There'd been rumors. They actually talked to me at the party for the 100th episode about what they thought they were going to do with him, and then they must've changed their mind because it didn't come to being. (edit)
Garwin Sanford: (On if his Earth: Final Conflict character Federov was good or evil) When I got to Toronto to do my first episode "Arrival" I sat down with the people involved and made sure we were on the same page. I think they wanted a character that was powerful and charming, and at the same time hard as a rock and extremely cold underneath. I love nothing more than to be the bad guy who exudes charm and confidence outside, while also hiding a dark side. Federov operates in the world where everyone around him will cut other persons throat if given the chance. So he has to make sure he`s always one step ahead of them. At the same time, if it doesn't serve his purpose he won`t hurt anyone, you know? (edit)
Garwin Sanford: (On the most challenging part of playing Narim) Fortunately the character fit me like a glove. I felt comfortable playing him, so it wasn't a challenge, it was a pleasure. I wish I could say same about Narim's silver suit. It was pretty hot on the "Enigma" set and that suit wasn't at all comfortable. Luckily I got to wear what looked like a pair of pajamas in "Pretence" and they were much more comfortable. Also, do you remember Narim's perfect hair? People kept kidding me that bullets could bounce off that kind of hair. (edit)
Garwin Sanford:(On his favorite memory of Stargate SG-1) Working with Amanda Tapping. She`s just a joy. In the episode Narim falls for Sam Carter, so Amanda and I had a few scenes together. She knew I hadn`t had much time to prepare, so at lunchtime she said "Come on, let`s rehearse." In fact she did the same thing when I came back for my second story (Pretence). I cannot say enough good words for her. Also, when I first arrived on the set, I had a chat with director William Gereghty I just wanted to make sure he and I were on the same page with regard to my character. I saw Narim as kind and gentle individual. He`s childlike as opposed to childish, do you know what I mean? I love his innocence and matter-of-fact attitude. There`s no pretense with him. Narim just looks at you and speaks the truth. (edit)
