General Hospital, the Emmy Award-Winning drama series hailed by critics as the 'The Greatest Soap Opera of All Time', recently celebrated 45 years of broadcasting.

The tradition of passion, intrigue, and adventure takes place in the fictional town of Port Charles, set in upstate New York. The glamour and excitement of those who have come to find their destinies in this familiar seaport town intertwine with the lives, loves, and fortunes of beloved, well-known faces. And, as always, love and danger continue to abound whether on the docks, in the ER, at brownstones, or trespassing on Quartermaine property with contemporary storylines and unforgettable characters.

In the past several years, General Hospital has been praised by national organizations for elevating the public awareness of several important social issues. It has received three SHINE awards for its continued contribution to the awareness of sexual responsibility. The Ryan White Foundation presented its 1996 Ryan's Angels Award to "General Hospital" for the moving and thorough examination of HIV/AIDS through the characters of Robin, Stone, and the Nurses' Ball. The show was further honored by the American Red Cross for its HIV/AIDS-related storylines. Several other prestigious awards have been bestowed upon "General Hospital" for confronting sexual child abuse, organ donation, and other social issues as well.

The program inspired Port Charles, the spin-off series that premiered in June 1997, and ended October 2003. In 2007 the 3rd spin-off General Hospital: Night Shift premiered which revolves around the interns and the doctors working the night shift at the hospital. GH has had lots of movie and tv stars (and those in the making) over the years such as Demi Moore, Jack Wagner, Vanessa Marcil, Elizabeth Taylor, Ricky Martin, Rick Springfield, John Stamos, among others, as well as other soap opera stars.

General Hospital is the longest-running dramatic serial on the ABC Network, and is the longest-running daytime drama produced on the West Coast. In May of 2000, General Hospital made Daytime Emmy history as the only Daytime drama to ever receive the prestigious Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama series a record seven times, marking the show's fifth win in six years (1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2000). It had also garnered the Emmy Award as Outstanding Daytime Drama Series in 1980-81 and 1983-84. In the 40th Anniversary Special Edition of TV Guide, General Hospital was hailed as the "All-Time Best Daytime Soap."

General Hospital was created by Frank and Doris Hursley. General Hospital currently airs Monday-Friday (3:00-4:00 p.m., ET; & 2:00-3:00 p.m., PT) on the ABC Television Network.   Briefly Addicted - hide « show »

  For a brief period, back in the early 80s, when I was working the night shift, before the days of cable TV, when I was home all day, there was very little choice as to what to watch, on TV. It was game shows in the morning, and soap operas in the afternoon. Somehow or other, ABC's 'Love In The Afternoon' soaps grabbed me,(I still remember that silly jingle they played, during the previews) and held me. 'One Life To Live' at 1 p.m. (CST), and 'General Hospital' at 2. I kinda sorta kept up with 'OLTL', but I never missed 'GH'. I remember the Quartermaines, The Webbers, and the Scotty/Laura/Luke triangle, and I hated every character to some degree. In fact, the only character I really liked was Jeff Webber, played, of course, by the pre-MacGyver Richard Dean Anderson. I was so into it, that I went to work a lot of nights, stressed out because of some silly something that happened on 'GH'. After I went on the day shift, in 1982, I taped it for a year or so, and watched it in the evenings. But, somehow, a daytime Soap just isn't the same, when you watch it at night, and, eventually I kind of drifted away from it, and lost interest. I guess, maybe, I just grew up. But, for a while, there, I was hooked, and - Despite the embarrassment it caused me, when my buddies found out I was a soap-watcher - I enjoyed it, and the memories are pleasant.

  This is not a show someone like me would normally watch but I love it. I don't know what it is about this show but it has me hooked. I look foward to watching this show every day and it makes me hate the weekend because it's not on. hide « show »

  This is one of the better soaps on television today. A lot of people don't like the mob direction that the show is going in. Personaly I love it because it gives you the action and yet the love stories at the same time. I love most of the story lines. And I love watching how all the charaters interact together. This show has the most endearing love story of all times the couple that all other couples are judged on Luke and Laura. Like every other soap it includes a fashion magazine run by the towns socialite. I live to watch this soap every day and It makes me sad when the weekend comes because it won't be on.

  i started watching general hospital in 93.. I fell in love with the character of brenda Barrett.. then her and Sonny kept me glued... in time I fell in love with Jason morgan which keeps me glued to it even now..So handsome, charming and even dangerous.. I loved Jason & Sam.. they became my supercouple they split but i still love to watch both amazing characters.. I also love Maxie she's so honest, poor distressed Lulu, the tragedic love story of Nik and emily.. so many different things to watch all in one place.. Great show.. the writers been sucking lately but still great show.. its the soap opera that feels more like a primetime drama .. love it

  I have NEVER and would never of even thought about watching a soap opera. And the only reason I even gave this one a shot is because I saw that John J. York was in it. I watch it and...Where the hell is he??!!! So... hide « show »

  So, I watch it for a while and just today I see him and every scene he is in he says like 8 words or less! Well, despite that, I got hooked! I enjoy the ocasional scenes with John in them, Which is just what I wanted to see but more of it, I never thought I would actually like this show without him as a main character but WOW! I do NOT like soaps but this was great! I just REALLY REALLY wish that they would give John more scenes, or at least more speaking in his little scenes. I was very irritated that he's not in it very much, but I really do like the show. I want the people that create this show to think about this, you've gained a vital new fan all because of John J. York. I know a whole lot of my friends, when they heard that John was in the show they did the same as me and now you have many other new, fresh fans. I think for that and other reasons(like him being a great actor, despite his age) he should get a bigger role. I don't know what the reason for the extremely small role he has but please try to get him a bigger role! I would very much recommend this show to anyone who enjoys...well, shows. You don't have to like soap operas to like this show! :) I remain a loyal fan to John and now to this wonderful show!

  General Hospital is where lives are intertwined in Port Charles USA hide « show »

  The show is strong, courageous and at times light hearted! Lately the show has been more dark than easy going. It needs more light hearted characters. More Diane, Spinelli and Julius! Life is so heavy these days, we need more light hearted fare. We need more people like Kate's pal Julius to bring more fun and zaniness to the show. Sonny is dark and brooding and b=very serious, however he is very receptive to Julius and all his shenanigans. Makes it more appealing and more everyday. From Luke and Laura-we all love Laura, to Robin and Anna, Monica and Alan, we watch this show to learn and love. We also use to watch this show to laugh!
  Lets bring back the laughter of one of our favorite past times!
