I just read this ridiculous essay for class about TV violence that basically said there are no negative consequences of violent actions for "heroes." They even go so far as to say that there are no negative psychological consequences. So I wanted to compile a list of TV "heroes" that have been killed/injured, or that have suffered some sort of psychological consequences in the line of duty.

So far all I've got is:
-David Palmer and Curtis from 24
-Vaughn from Alias (yeah I know he came back, but he still died for a while)

My problem is I don't watch that many other "violent" shows, so I was wondering if I could get some help on here!

On Miami Vice the character of Zito was murdered. In Law and Order, the assistant DA played by the actress who is in Crossing Jordan was killed in a car crash. Some of the ensemble were killed off in St. Elsewhere. There were series where an actor died and the character's death was written into the future scripts - The Waltons, Hill Street Blues, and other ones where a character's death was implied and the series tried to change - All in the Family became something like Archie Bunker's Place. Lost has killed off principle characters, but they can come back in flashbacks.

Many characters have been killed off on TV shows, for various reasons.  Sometimes, it's because an actor is fired because of salary disputes (Valerie Harper, "The Hogan Family"), or the performer wants to leave the program and persue other projects (Denise Crosby, Star Trek : TNG).  Other times it's simply for taking a TV show in a whole new dramatic direction (for example, John Schnider was killed off on "Smallville"), and finally, as mentioned above, an actor who was playing a role passed away (John Ritter, "8 Simple Rules".)  I hope that helped a little.  :-) If you would like more of a list, e-mail me and I can help you out.

Federal agents Lamar Kane and Cam Allison got killed off on the first season of The Untouchables.  In another episode it was mentioned that a third Untouchable named George Dayton had been killed in the line of duty but he was never seen on the show or mentioned again.

JT from Degrassi was stabbed in a recent episode. He's been on the show for the past 6 years.

Speed from CSI:Miami was another main character that was killed off because the actor claimed that he couldn't take the grind of a weekly TV show.

Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer died TWICE. And she had a LOT of psychological/emotional issues to deal with.

And the main character on "Hex" was killed off.

Dean from Supernatural has nearly died twice on the show (electrocuted by his own taser, hit by a semi) and is currently on the FBI's most wanted list. Agent Booth from Bones has a lot of repressed guilt about his past as an army sniper. Michael from Prison Break feels guilty not just about the things he's done, but about the actions of the other escapees that, but for him, would still be safely behind bars. Eliott Stabler on L&O:SVU has anger management problems stemming from the horrors he sees while on the job. Whoever says that TV doesn't show the consequences of violence clearly doesn't watch TV these days.

The guy on Six Feet Under. I feel bad because I'm completely drawing a blank on his name but I wasn't an avid watcher.

Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan (The blue lady from Farscape) was killed off of the show. She was a lead.

24 kills a lot of people
    Battlestar Galactica, too
Someone already mentioned MASH, Ally McBeal, and Lost, I think...
