Ghosts can be stuck in time as this tale will show.
While getting x-rays to check for a possible head injury after the airplane crash Memorial fell on her, Melinda has to retake them because another face shows up on the film besides her own. Back at work a young woman brings in a trunk full of old stuff to have the shop consign. Delia rushes Melinda down to the steps with it and the trunk begins to move. It slams up against the wall and a door appears! Melinda looks in the door but can't see anything. Then the door disappears.
When she goes back upstairs the town council is there to present her with a plaque. A photographer from "Shame the Devil" blog takes some very interesting pictures!
Melinda visits her mom to find out answers to her questions about having a brother and her father. Her mother is quite mum on the whole affair. She does state she didn't have any other children though.
After closing the store a door appears in the road. Melinda opens it and she finds the trunk again and a man telling her that she killed his wife. She finally realizes the ghost is attached to the trunk and to the young woman who brought it in. She finds out that the young woman's biological parents were killed the same day in a gas explosion when the young lady was very young. She finally finds, with the help of her ghostly dad some newspaper clippings in the town archives. She also gets a dire warning from the ghost who resides in the archives. The newspaper clippings have a picture of her mother at the site of the gas explosion! She goes to visit her mother again explaining the ghost is blaming her for a death and her mother finally explains what happened that day. This helps Melinda make peace with the ghost and with the daughter. But before she does that she gets a dire warning from her mother! Good show!
I waited all summer to find out what happened to Melinda and her the children that saved her. hide show
Okay, writers, did you eat the children that saved Melinda? Couldn't you eat Gabriel too?
Melinda begins the quest to find her missing father and reunite with her brother. Makes you wonder why granny didn't help Gabriel like she helped Melinda. Do I smell favortism here? How come Melinda doesn't remember her father blocking the light, beckoning her to the bad side of life. I could hear Darth Vader - - - - Luke come to the dark side - - -as Gabriel and her father baited her. Yet she seems to be totally unaware that dad and bro are evil! That's a woman for you.
For a disclaimer: I hate rip off premises. The so called "Steal from the best and make it your own" not always convince me, especially when the audience can tell exactly how much is "stolen" and how much is "your own". hide show
That being said, the season premiere of Ghost whisperer has clearly stolen the half-brother-with-powers theme from "Medium" and added the rival element of "Tru Calling" counterpart to his motivations. However, the "make it you own" award goes to the twist on Medium's main love triangle as Professor Payne admits his feelings for Melinda on camera for the first time; this way the intellectual turns out to be NOT the medium's husband but rather the silent man yearning on the side and the hunky guy – i.e. Jim – the guy she's married to (rather than the silent detective yearning on the side). Plus, there're still no children that could suffer the consequences of mum decision over her two guys.
The case is classic "Ghost whisperer" as Melinda must try to correct her mother's mistake that cost a little girl her parents over 15 years ago and give her the pictures his father saved for her before he died in order for her to reconnect with her birth family and more importantly to allow her to see a picture of her mother face for the first time. The episode also gives us some clues as to what should be the arc of the season: Mel's quest to reconnect with her father and half-brother and the mysterious message neither one of them could deliver to her last season finale.
Pretty good episode, but the series, in general, has a habit of falling back on obvious twists. Definitely necessarily informative for the series narrative, though. hide show
Sorry about the late reviews...I like to let an episode simmer in my mind so I can fully decide if I liked it or not. Its memorable moments are an important facet. Then I watch it again.
If you read the other reviews, you know what happened. I wont' recap that stuff.
I liked the interactions with her dad, including re-embodying herself as a girl. She'll always feel that way, and it feels right that she doesn't talk to him like they're both adults.
What is going on with the public records ghost? I like him, but he's a little moody. Not that I'm complaining. It's nice to have a ghost that doesn't fit in the mold of the others. Almost like he was scoping her out to see if she was like the others said and then when their comments were confirmed he got rough. I think he's overplayed his hand, with the threats...Melinda obviously has very little to fear, other than the dark.
Melinda's mom is a bore. Kill her off. Please! They can even make her a martyr or something just so she can come back "in the light" and give helpful advice like granny and dad do.
Now, to some generalizations:
Am I the only one who likes Prof. Payne? He adds a light hearted banter to what would be an overly dark script. I'd like to see him start to get more hands on into Melinda's investigations (though, please not romantically!). Maybe he could even learn to forgive his wife...
Jim Jim Jim Jim Jim...I loved Jim in season 1. He became a drag in season 2. Melinda needs him to hold onto reality, so I don't want him killed off, but they need to work on the character. I don't think it's Conrad's acting that's the problem...they just aren't doing anything with him. It's been a few years into Jim and Melinda's marriage. Let's have an argument or some other realistic marriage problems. I don't claim some marriages aren't wonderful (mine own has been wonderful for 10 years and I don't see an end to that), but let's get real, here. I'm not asking for anyone to break their fidelity (or even test it), but a little marriage stress could bring them together even stronger.
Someone please flush Delia. Really. She's boring and predictable. You see ghosts? I don't see anything... duh. Big fat miss don't ask don't tell is a pain in the rear and her kid sucks (If we don't ever see him again, it'll be just fine with me!)
Other than that...I love the series! B-)
Third season great way to kick things off hide show
The third season was the best season opener for GW
As Jennifer comes into Melinda's store and wanting to
Give up her parents belongings. As her dad died as a young
Child with Melinda trying to help her bury the past and
Move on. As well as find a way to be reconnected
With her the dad that she never knew. Meanwhile, someone is
Taking pics of Melinda as something is fishy going on with
Her as not just having to do with her. But with
Her past. As there maybe something that she even doesn't know as well. About her family tree. Really good opener and glad that CBS didn't cancel it.
