It Should've Been Lorelai

Episode Number: 35    Season Num: 2    First Aired: Tuesday February 12, 2002    Prod Code: 227464
Christopher comes to town on a business trip with his girlfriend Sherry in tow. Since Sherry and Christopher's relationship is getting serious, Sherry wants to begin bonding with Rory -- on Friday night. Without consulting Emily, Lorelai excuses Rory from the Gilmore Friday night dinner, and takes Christopher with her instead. When Emily finds out about Sherry over cocktails, she has a meltdown and rushes off to the kitchen. Lorelai follows her there and finds out that Emily has always envisioned that Lorelai and Christopher would end up together. Now that she sees that this isn't going to happen, Emily blames Lorelai for always keeping him, and everyone else, at arms length. After mulling over her mother's words, the next morning Lorelai tells Christopher that she believes she's always thought that they would get back together, too, and that's one reason why she's never had a relationship that lasted, including the one with Max. Christopher gets very angry, refusing to accept the responsibility for the way Lorelai's romantic life has turned out. Lorelai immediately apologizes, saying she did not mean it blamefully, but more as self-realization, but Christopher is too angry to listen.

Quotes

Debate moderator: Chilton has won the coin toss so they will pick pro or con on assisted suicide.
Paris: Pro
Brad: What a shock! (edit)
Luke: You okay?
Lorelai: Yeah.
Luke: You don’t seem your chipper self.
Lorelai: I brought some sparklers. I’ll light them later and do some kicks.
Luke: You know, if you want I can clear the counter and you can play some bagel hockey.
Lorelai: You can’t play bagel hockey by yourself.
Luke: I’ll play with you. You’ll have to explain the rules.
Lorelai: It’s okay. I’m just trying to recover from last night. It was one of those nights where you start off stepping in quicksand and end up with a sixteen-ton anvil landing on your head.
Luke: I’ve had plenty of those. I’ll bring some coffee. (edit)
Rory:(about Sherry) She's a very safe driver. Stops at yellow lights, uses her turn signals...
Lorelai: So she will not be driving our getaway car.
Rory: What are we robbing?
Lorelai: A Sephora. We talked about this.
Rory: Right. Sorry. (edit)
Paris: According to the rules, we're not supposed to have dairy forty-eight hours before the debate. Did you eat any dairy today?
Rory: The milk in my cereal?
Paris: WHAT?!
Lorelai: Rory, your dad's on the phone.
Rory: Okay! (Takes phone)
Paris: (To Lorelai) Did you give her the milk?
Lorelai: Uh, I'd rather not say. (edit)
Lorelai: Hello, Paris. Were we expecting you?
Paris: You should have been! (edit)

Trivia

add »
When Lorelai and Christopher are sitting at the table in Luke's diner, there is a bowl of fruit in front of Lorelai. As the scene progresses and the camera angles change, the bowl constantly moves positions. Also, in some frames a coffee cup is next to the fruit but is missing in others. (edit)
When Lane asks Rory to pick up the new single for her she says she tried Amazon but they wouldn't send it in a plain package. So why didn't she just have it sent to Rory's? (edit)
In this episode, Mrs. Kim tells Kirk she's known him since he was two. In "Last Week Fights, This Week Tights", Mrs. Kim tells Lorelai that she's been in this country for twenty years. This would mean that Kirk is either a lot younger than he appears or that Mrs. Kim met Kirk when he was two and then returned to Korea and stayed another ten years before coming to the States again. (edit)
Lorelai told Rory to clean her room because Sherry wanted to see it. However, Lorelai takes off her coat and tosses it into Rory's room which would mess it up. (edit)
When Lorelai and Rory talk about retiring their bagel hockey goalie, Schmitty, they say he's ready for Cooperstown. Cooperstown is where the Baseball Hall of Fame is. The Hockey Hall of fame is in Toronto.

Possible Explantaion: Educated as the Gilmores are when it comes to music and movies, it is VERY possible that they do not know where the Hockey Hall of Fame is. After all, in season 3's The Faceoff, Rory clearly feels that eating excessive amounts of junk food is the highlight of any sports game, particularly hockey. (edit)

Allusions

add »
Luke: Or Outer Limits-y.

Luke is refering to the show The Outer Limits which aired from 1963-1965. It was a science fiction program that was about subjects like hard science, space travel, time travel, and human evolution. It was also always questioning the nature of man. (edit)
Lorelei: She kept calling her [Sherry] "that woman"!

This is an allusion on Elisabeth II, the queen of England, who used the same expression about her son prince Charles long time mistress (now wife) Camilla Parker-Bowles. (edit)
Rory (about Christopher and Sherry): Should we invite them to Luke's?
Lorelai: Does she seem like a diner chick to you?

Mädchen Amick (Sherry) starred in TV series Twin Peaks (directed by Mark Frost and David Lynch) as diner waitress Shelly Johnson. (edit)
Lorelai: Schmitty's over the hill. He's washed up. Put him in Cooperstown.

Cooperstown is the location of the Baseball Hall of Fame. (edit)
Rory: What did she think? That you were gonna come home and find a rabbit boiling on the stove?

In the climactic scene of the movie Fatal Attraction, Michael Douglas' character comes home to find that his stalker (played by Glenn Close) has killed his children's pet rabbit and left it in a pot of boiling water on the kitchen stove. (edit)
