Scene in a MallEpisode Number: 80 Season Num: 4 First Aired: Tuesday February 24, 2004 Prod Code: 176165 |
Kirk branches out from dog sitting for Lulu into a new canine-centered career; Paris goes into germ-phobic overdrive when Rory gets a cold; Lane gets an apartment with Zach and Brian and faces a frigid reception from her aunt and mother, and an overly-eager, non-stop-talking cousin when she packs up her things and moves out; when they realize that their relationship is increasingly being conducted over email and the phone, Lorelai and Rory decide to play hooky and go window shopping in the mall, where they run into Emily in the middle of a shopping binge meltdown; Luke lends Lorelai the thirty thousand dollars she needs to finish construction on the Inn; after Emily confesses that the shopping binge and bickering with Richard stems from her anger at being ignored, neglected, and made to feel useless by her husband, Lorelai reassures her of how much she's accomplished and urges her to talk to Richard, but Emily can't seem to make the connection with her husband she so desperately desires; Rory and Luke get a peek into Dean's life as a married man, and Luke gets an inkling that something is amiss when he catches Dean's wistful looks towards Rory as Dean unsuccessfully tries to paint a happy picture of life with Lindsay and her parents.

Kirk: Luke, do you know whose dog this is?
Luke: Isn't that Snuggles?
Lorelai: You know Snuggles?
Kirk: It's not Snuggles. Snuggles got picked up, nobody picked this guy up.
Luke: You have a dog left over?
Lorelai: You know Snuggles by name?
Kirk: He has no tags, so I've been trying random sounds to see if he'll respond. Pooku... Nena... Checu... (edit) Lorelai: Is it okay if I work on my laptop?
Luke: Does it make noise?
Lorelai: No, but I do sometimes.
Luke: You always do. (edit) Tom: What's with the flower?
Rory: It's so my mom and I will recognize each other.
Tom: Girl thing?
Rory: Yeah.
Tom: I'm not into girl things.
Rory: You're a contractor. (edit) Emily: Why do I need to slow down? This is what I do, according to Richard and he's not slowing down. He's got a whole new life! He's got Pennilyn Lott, he's got Digger, he's got a mustache! He's got all that and what do I have? Maybe I should get a job so I can have my own life. I could sell shoes here just as well Eduardo. I should get an application. (yells at no-one in particular) Get me an application! Go! Go! (edit) Emily: Crazy? You think this is crazy?
Lorelai: Okay, Mom --
Emily: This isn't crazy!
Lorelai: I didn't mean to --
Emily: That stupid mustache is crazy! That's what's crazy! Your father's job is crazy! That's what's crazy! (edit)

While in the diner, Kirk tells Luke how he made sure that Lulu didn't go away with men by calling and asking the hotel whose name the room was under. Luke responds with a list of unisex names (one of which is, oddly, Carol, a female name) and when Kirk asks what they are Luke says "Oh, just a list of guys' names that could be girls". This line should've been, "A list of girls' names that could be guys".
(edit)
On the table at Luke's when Lorelai and Rory are sorting through what Emily bought them towards the end of the episode, several items, including the blue and pink little clutch purses, change spots and positions throughout the scene.
(edit)
At the end of the episode, when Lorelai and Rory are taking inventory in Luke's Diner, they argue over the free tote bag that came with their purchase. Previously, in episode 4.1 "Ballrooms and Biscotti," they mention not having any tote bags, stating how unbelievable it is that they never received one for spending over $50 of Clinique products.

When Emily tries to buy Lorelai a watch, Lorelai says that she doesn't wear a watch. In episodes prior, specifically season two "Red Light on Wedding Night" and "Sadie Sadie" Lorelai is wearing a watch.
Possible Explanation: Lorelai might have been lying to Emily. Before this scene took place, Lorelai had made it pretty clear that she didn't want to shop with Emily and she didn't want Emily to buy her anything. She could have simply been trying to stop Emily from buying her the watch by lying to her. (edit) Rory and Lorelai keep saying that they are too broke to buy anything from the mall, yet they manage to scrounge up enough money to treat Emily to lunch and buy something from practically every restaurant in the food court. For that matter, Rory and Lorelai always seem to be "short on money," but they eat out or order in food almost every day.
Possible Explanation: Two episodes before this one, in 'Nag Hammadi Is Where They Found the Gnostic Gospels,' Rory mentioned that there wasn't any leftover take out, that there was food in the house (bread, chesse, etc.), and that the movie channels were missing. Those are all ways that Lorelai was cutting back to save money. Plus, shopping at the money can cost a lot, while the food is almost always cheap. We've seen the way Lorelai and Rory like to shop, so it might be possible that they didn't have enough to shop the way they would have liked to, but the food at the food court was cheap enough for them to buy. Rory: (To Dean in his construction worker outfit) Can I have your autograph? Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were one of the Village People.
The Village People was a band from the 70's where the members all dressed like a construction worker, a cop, an Indian chief, a soldier, a biker and a cowboy. (edit) Lorelai: (Holding a Manolo Blahnik) Me wants them! My precious!!
Lorelai is imitating the character, Gollum, from the novels, The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. In the story, Gollum is consumed by his want of the ring and frequently calls it "his precious." The voice that Lorelai uses imitates the voice of Andy Serkis's Gollum in the movie adaptations by Peter Jackson. (edit) Lorelai: It's just when I picture letter writing, I picture Charles Dickens.
Luke: Charles Dickens wrote more letters than other people?
Charles Dickens was a famous English Author of the 19th century. He did actually write more letters than other people of his day, thousands upon thousands of letters in fact. (edit) Christine: I love the floorboard thing! It's so Hogan's Heroes.
Hogan's Heroes was a TV series that lasted for 6 seasons from 1965 to 1971. The main story was about a group of prisoners during World War II lead by Col. Hogan who try to sabotage the German war effort. (edit) Rory: How very The L-Word.
The L Word is a drama on Showtime about the lives and loves of a group of women in same-sex relationships. (edit)
