Maya, Joan and Lynn at the J-Spot.

Maya: "What would prompt that boy to play with fire?"
Lynn: (subconsciously waving a gas lighter and touching the flame.) "He's a kid, he could have picked it up from anywhere." (edit) Maya, Lynn and Joan at Joan's house.

Joan: "I'm not making any excuses for Jabari's actions, but he is at an age where theres ; theres a lot of peer pressure."

Later on at her house..

Maya: "Just yesterday, ya' know Jabari was running around in his underoos playing with his trains and now he's fourteen, he's got some peach fuzz, and he thinks he can pull stuff past his momma. But you know what, na uh, I have nipped that all in the bud. I sat him down and gave him one of my very effective one on ones.

Lynn: (clearly shocked) "Oh my god Maya you slapped him?"
Maya: "No!"
Lynn: "But that's what you do when you give me a one on one!"
Maya: "That's because you get sidetracked! I am an authoress. I can set that boy straight using my words. And right now, as we speak he is at home, rewriting and repenting."

Cut to Maya's house, where Jabari is sitting on the couch, lighting a match. When the flame gets out of control, he throws it on the floor, causing a fire, and then he flees. (edit) Maya talking to Jabari who's playing his game.
Maya: "Um, why do you have a ticket that places you at the multiplex in the middle of a school day?"

Later on in the discussion..
Jabari: "That was the only real class I missed, plus, look." (Jabari digs in his backpack and pulls out a paper.) "I already got an A in the English essay."

Moments later..
Maya: "Oh hell no! This is chapter five from my book! You plagiarized me?!"
Jabari: (jokingly, biting nails) "Did I mention 'we' got an A?"
Maya: "You need to be more concerned about how long you're going to be grounded." (edit)
