Sean, with an electric guitar, is jamming with Henry, playing a plastic flutaphone, and Jimmy, on bongos, when Eddie arrives. He's back from New Orleans and has a big black eye. He immediately notices that Sean has a Les Paul guitar and wants to play it. At first Sean refuses, but then relents. Eddie cranks up the amp, plays a power chord and the lights go out. Claudia comes in as Sean's re-stringing the guitar..As a musician, Sean is amazingly sexy to Claudia.
Lily arrives, and Eddie observes that she really stinks. Lily tells Sean she hopes he's happy. She has pig's blood all over her Sketchers. Sean explains to Eddie that Lily came home all fired up about going on a school ski trip. When Sean learns that it will cost five hundred dollars, he puts his foot down. They can't afford it. When Lily realizes that nothing's going to make him change his mind, she freaks out.
Sean tells Eddie that everything would have been okay if Eddie hadn't opened his mouth. He reminds him of the afternoon their dad came over and gave each of them a check for eighteen hundred dollars, money from a bank account belonging to their late mother. Eddie talked about the money in Lily's presence, saying he was taking his share and going to New Orleans. Lily automatically assumed that now she could go on the ski trip. Sean sets her straight; they're taking their money and using it for something sensible, a water heater. But Sean and Claudia pass a guitar store, and there's the Les Paul he's been wanting forever. Claudia cheers him on. She may have to take cold showers without the new water heater, but she'll be needing them.
Later, Eddie confesses that his black eye came from a woman in New Orleans who punched him when he asked her to "show us your goodies." Sean and Eddie remember when they had a band. Eddie points out that he was lead guitarist, and it's the lead guitarist who's the sexy one. Once during a performance Eddie grabbed Sean's guitar and smashed it, but that's all behind them now, since Sean has a Les Paul.
Lily goes ballistic when she realizes that Sean spent "her" ski trip money on a guitar. Sean has ruined her life. Walt comes in and tries to give Lily a Radio Flyer sled as a consolation prize, but she's having no part of it. Walt wants to know why Lily smells like dead animals. To make a statement, she got a job with the butcher down the street. When Sean and Walt go to see her, she's carrying around a pig's head. Walt offers to give her the money, but Sean refuses.
Later, Claudia tells Lily it was a good try, but they're keeping the guitar. The guitar takes them back to a time when they were young and stupid and they liked it. Lily needs to give them a break. Lily relents, but that makes Sean feel so guilty that he's never going to enjoy the guitar again. He gives up and tells Lily she can have her trip. He tells Claudia the important thing was that their daughter made an unselfish gesture. Besides, it'll be too late to return it that night if they take it upstairs for an hour.
