Set fifteen years after the final firstrun episode, Matt Dillon is now retired and living as a mountain man and guardian to a group of Indian children. An ex-con tracks him down looking for vengeance, but Matt out-draws him. Matt is stabbed by some scavengers while bringing the outlaw back to Dodge and barely survives his injuries. After his recovery he is forced into a showdown with another former for, outlaw Will Mannon, who was just released from prison.

The television movie is a sequel to the episode, "Mannon" (Jan. 20,1969), and features flashbacks to that episode,
in spite of the fact Matt killed Mannon at the end of the episode. (edit) James Arness, Buck Taylor, and Amanda Blake are the only cast members from the original episodes to reprise their roles in this movie. Taylor and Blake did not reprise their roles in the other reunion movies. (edit)
