  • Bruce Murakami was
    interviewed at Hallmark
    in Kansas City, Mo.,
    on Feb. 12, 2007:

"I remember Nov. 16, 1998 like it was yesterday. It was a beautiful Florida day. I’d come home for lunch with my wife, Cindy, and my daughter, Chelsea. Before I headed back to a job site [Murakami was a contractor], I kissed them goodbye. That’s something we always did, even if we were going to be apart for just for a few hours.

A little while later as I was running back to the house for something, I saw black smoke on the horizon. At first I thought it was a house fire, but it turned out to be a bad car crash that turned into a fire.

I looked up the road and had an eerie feeling that I needed to get closer to see what had happened. I remember stopping my truck, getting out, and walking quickly toward the fire.

This feeling just came over me. I really can’t describe it. Sure enough, one of the vehicles was our family van. My first thought was to look for Cindy and Chelsea to see if they’d escaped. But then I realized there’s no way they could have survived the crash and fire." edit »
