Jack Duvall, a talent scout from Paramount Pictures in Hollywood, and his assistant, Hinstead, come into Arnold's looking for the mechanic. Ralph and Potsie start auditioning for them. Fonzie comes in. The scouts are having auditions in Chicago, and their limousine has broken down. Duvall is impressed with Fonzie after he sees him with the girls and thinks he could be America's new James Dean. Fonzie brings his cousin, Chachi, to the Cunningham house. Chachi announces that Fonzie has been discovered by a talent scout and is going to Hollywood for a screen test. Chachi leaves. Ralph and Potsie show up wearing sunglasses and carrying a surf board (actually an ironing board) announcing they are going to Hollywood with Fonzie. Fonzie suggests that the whole family all go to Hollywood as well. Howard is resistant to the idea because of a Leopard Lodge convention, but he relents. The plane leaves, and they arrive in California. Howard talks to Mr. Duvall and then talks to Lorne Greene at the front of the Hollywood Palms Motel. Fonzie wears his leather jacket on the beach and meets Wendy. Howard nearly stabs a man with his sun umbrella. Joanie meets some boys. Marion's hat blows off, and as Howard chases it, he trips over some kids' sand castle. Richie reminds Fonzie that they need to memorize his lines. The boys toss Joanie up in a blanket. Richie trips and lands on a girl named Nancy Croft. They start talking, and Richie asks if he can rub suntan lotion on her. Some guys announce that a live shark has been caught and is in a pen. Ralph and Potsie rush onto the beach after hearing the news. Richie introduces Nancy to Fonzie. Nancy is an oceanography major at UCLA. They discuss the shark. Nancy's cousin is water-skiing. He is the California Kid whose real name is Harold. The Kid and Fonzie exchange some insults. To settle their dispute, the Kid suggests a contest: water-skiing the slalom course. Everyone sits around a fire on the beach at night. Richie and Nancy take a walk. Potsie sings "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?"
