Herb started playing the trumpet at age eight and at 15 started a trio in high school. After being drafted into the Army and playing in the Sixth Army band in San Francisco, California, he partnered with promoter/producer Jerry Moss in 1962 and founded A&M records.
He started his own recording career with the song "The Lonely Bull." Teaming with the Tijana Brass, other classic songs followed such as "Taste of Honey," "Tijuana Taxi," "Spanish Flea," and "Casino Royale." In the late 1960's, A&M signed many artists such as the Flying Burrito Brothers, Joe Cocker, Peter Frampton, Carole King, the Police, Leon Russell, and Cat Stevens.
The easy listening brother/sister duo the Carpenters was A&M's most successful artist in the early 1970's. Herb sold A&M Records in 1989 and in 1994 Alpert and Moss started a new label and began recording again in the late 1990's.
