Episode Summary

No one ever came out of the Cave of Echoes. But Hercules and Iolaus were determined to rescue young Melina, who had disappeared inside the cave. Parentheses, a young writer whom they had recently befriended, joined them in the rescue effort. At first eager, Parentheses became more and more frightened by the bloodcurdling roars from deep within the cave. But he overcame his fear when Hercules sent him down into the pit to save the girl. Fortunately, there was no monster - only a tree root - but the adventure was enough to fortify Parentheses, who walked off arm-in-arm with Melina.

The season rounds off with a clip show, as Hercules and Iolaus, accompanied by a timid young writer, head into the perilous Cave of Echoes to rescue a man's daughter, whilst they recall some of their past adventures. A cost cutter if ever there was one... hide show

The season goes out on somewhat of a whimper with this cost-cutting show, heavily made up with clips from past episodes.

The plot involves Hercules and Iolaus wandering around dark cave sets looking for the damsel in distress, which recounting some of their past adventures to timid writer Parenthesis, who has insisted on coming along.

I would have much preferred to have seen the season go out with the impressive 'The Wedding of Alcmene' than this cheap offering.

I did find it rather pointless that a number of the clips were taken from the five Hercules television movies, which had already been showcased as clips in the fifth movie, 'Hercules in the Maze of the Minotaur', when and by the production of this story there was a much wider range of episodes to select clips from.

That said, I did find this episode marginally more watchable than the dull 'Xena: Warrior Princess' clip show 'Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards'. Marginally.

Thankfully, from the next season, clip shows from both 'Hercules: The Legendary Journeys' and 'Xena: Warrior Princess' would start to set them against more novel backdrops, to make them slightly more palatable at least.

  • Producer Robert Tapert has said that he considers this to be one of the weakest episodes of the series, and that it let the series down. []
  • Hercules: Parenthesis, you're worrying too much about this size thing.
Parenthesis: Guys, I've been bitten by dogs, and believe me, the length of their teeth was directly proportional to the depth of my pain! []
  • Parenthesis: (after hearing about Hercules' battle with the Hydra) You know, I should really write something about that. Something that captures the emotional dissonance that pervades these creatures' psyches. Something that explores the existential force that carries Hercules and you through these challenges.
Iolaus: What is he talking about?
Hercules: I have no idea. []
  • Elopius: I didn't think you'd come for Melina if you knew the whole truth.
Iolaus: Wait a minute, this is Hercules and Iolaus- Monsters R Us! []
