- In this episode only, all military personnel wore khaki uniforms rather than the Air Force dress blue suits worn throughout the rest of the series (except for Army Captain and later Major Roger Healey, who would wear olive drab after this). edit »
- Continuity goof: When Tony lures Jeannie into her bottle with a black marble, she's wearing his shirt. Once inside the bottle, she's in her genie clothes. When he releases her from the bottle, she's in his shirt again. edit »
- Plot hole: General Stone and Melissa find Tony in an Arabian costume when they visit him at night. As they enter his house, Jeannie blinks his clothes back to normal, but the others don't seem to notice that his entire outfit changed in an instant while their backs were turned. They make no mention of it. edit »
- Larry Hagman's bikini briefs clearly show through his spacesuit in the first scene. edit »
- The original credits for the pilot version of the episode gave the name of Larry Hagman's character as "Captain Anthony WILSON", apparently an early name for the character before they settled on NELSON. Indeed, throughout the episode, his character is addressed only as simply "Captain", "Anthony", or "Tony", without ever using his last name. The only use of his last name that DOES appear is when a newspaper headline is shown that reads "NELSON SAFE", likely a replacement for an earlier "Wilson Safe" version.
When the series ran on Nick at Nite, the "Wilson" ending credit was shown. On TVLand, it read "Nelson". edit » - A professor from UCLA was brought in to tutor Barbara Eden in Farsi for her initial scenes on the island when Jeannie was found. edit »
- Jeannie's harem pants were more transparent than usual in the pilot. When the series began production, NBC insisted her trousers be lined with silk so that viewers couldn't see her legs peeking out through the fabric. edit »
- Because the pilot was filmed in December, the island where the scenes of Tony finding Jeannie was very cold, especially problematic for Barbara Eden because her genie costume was thin and left much skin exposed. edit »
- NBC aired "The Lady In the Bottle" only once. Most viewers wouldn't see it again until the episode appeared in syndication on local stations in the fall of 1970. edit »
- (Dr. Bellows enters his office, only to find Tony and Melissa kissing each other passionately...)
Dr. Bellows: (wry grin) I'm always fascinated by these local courtship customs! edit » - [Melissa stares at Jeannie standing in front of Tony's bedroom, still clad in "Master's" shirt, before she faces him again]
Melissa: [trying to stay calm] Tony...I may be, tolerant, but....(explodes in frustration) But that's a GIRL!
[running to front door] IT'S A GIRL!! [slams door on her way out] edit » - (after Melissa leaves)
Jeannie: What was that one doing here, Master?
Tony: "That one" was my fiancée.
Jeannie: Hah. Thou art kidding.
Tony: Now, just a minute, young lady. Melissa happens to be a very…
Jeannie: A black-haired demon.
Tony: Oh, well, yeah. Look who’s talking.
Jeannie: I can do much more for thee than she can. (thows her arms around his neck)
Tony: Now-now, stop that, Jeannie. We don’t do that in America. edit » - (Jeannie walks into the room wearing only one of Tony’s shirts)
Tony: Well. Well, look… look who’s here.
Melissa: I’m looking.
Tony: Oh, uh, Me-Melissa, this is… This is Jeannie.
Melissa: Tony. I’ve always prided myself on being tolerant, but… But would you explain to me, what is that girl doing here?
Tony: Uh, w-well, that’s the explanation. She’s not here.
(Jeannie giggles)
Melissa: What?
Tony: Uh, w-well, she is here, but of course, uh, she’s not a girl.
(Jeannie folds her arms, clearly mad) edit » - Dr. Bellows: What was this genie like?
Tony: Oh, she was… um, just your average, everyday, run-of-the-mill genie.
Dr. Bellows: Of course. Beautiful?
Tony: Yes, yeah.
Dr. Bellows: Desirable? And helpful?
Tony: Yes, yes.
Dr. Bellows: Captain, that’s the classic fantasy. A beautiful girl on a desert island. A girl who would do anything for you. Do you know who that girl was?
Tony: No, sir. I’ve never seen her before in my life.
Dr. Bellows: She was your mother.
Tony: My mother’s in Salt Lake City, sir.
Dr. Bellows: I’m a psychiatrist. I know a mother when I see one. edit »
