This series originally began in October of 1980 on ABC and ran for one season. ABC must have had faith in the show for it returned the following season under a new title, Making a Living. After that everyone thought they had seen the last of it, but in 1985, It's a Living restarted production for an additional four seasons which ran in syndication.

The stories revolved around the waitresses (who've included: Lois, Jan, Dot, Cassie, Vicki, Maggie, Amy and Ginger) their boss and hostess, Nancy, and the piano man Sonny. Also in the cast are the three chefs the restaurant has had over the years, Mario, Dennis and Howard.

NOTE: The last four years of the series aired in
syndication, so the airdates are approximate. Syndicated series
usually aired on weekends, so it is assumed that most channels aired It's a Living on Saturdays, since this was the day that Madison, Milwaukee and Green Bay channels aired them.

NOTE:The building used for the exterior of Above the Top is the Westin Bonaventure Hotel located in Los Angeles.

It's A Living obviously will not be remembered as a groundbreaking sitcom, if it is even remembered at all. But I loved this show when I was a teen-ager. I think I started watching it because I had a huge crush on Susan Sullivan when she was playing Julie Farr M.D.(I was 10). So I tuned into this and loved it. I kept watching even when Susan was replaced by Louise Lasser. AFter two seasons and a name change to Making A Living the show was cancelled. It returned three years later once again called It's A Living. This time Ann Jillian was the star, but she left after one season, replaced by Sheryl Lee Ralph. The show continued for three more seasons. This show had about as many lives as a cat. If ever there was a little show that could, this was it.
