Jackie: (asked if she struggles with the public recognition) Occasionally, when you’ve had a blue with someone or look daggy. On those occasions you might not have the energy to be as receptive as you usually are but, generally speaking, it’s fine.
(edit)
Jackie: (on the "Neighbours" storyline when Susan had amnesia) It was fun to play. It’s up there with the big soap stories such as “the returning twin”! When I first heard about it, I laughed. Then I thought about it seriously and said, “OK, this is an opportunity to discover who this woman was at 16.
(edit)
Jackie: (on what she loves the most about playing Susan in "Neighbours") I love it when she’s wrong - she often is - and when she embarrasses the kids and tries too hard. It’s good when she gets it a bit wrong. I struggle with her being just a passive reactor to stories. I think she’s much more interesting when she’s got things happening.
(edit)
Jackie: (on learning lines) I’m OK with lines - but a well-placed Post-it note on the other actor’s face can be very helpful.
(edit)
Jackie: (on her time in "Prisoner") Prisoner was a wonderful time and I do still see some ex-cast - Janet Andrewartha, of course, who plays Lyn Scully in Neighbours.
(edit)
Jackie: (asked if she is as strong as Susan on "Neighbours") Without a team of writers to guide my life, I think I’m as much a fiasco as the next person!
(edit)
Jackie: (on her most emotional scenes on "Neighbours") There have been several pretty high-voltage scenes around the betrayal stories… both Sarah and Izzy.
(edit)
Jackie: (on her favourite relationship on "Neighbours") I did enjoy Susan letting loose and having a one-time-only fling with Izzy’s dad, Bobby - mainly because Andrew McFarlane is so gorgeous!
(edit)
Jackie: (on her future on "Neighbours") Never say never. I do really enjoy it. We have a nice bunch of people and the show is continually reinvesting itself. And now I’m enjoying working with Alan again. We’ve been separated for three years, so this is a new, fresh thing. It feels like a new beginning.
(edit)
Jackie: (on how much alike she is with her "Neighbours" character) Our lives are very different but, personality-wise, I guess there’s always going to be a blurring after a while. I’ve tried to invest her with a sense of humour, and I’ve tried to make her a bit daggy. But she’s more mumsy than I am.
(edit)
Jackie: (on her thoughts when she joined "Neighbours") When I took the job I thought, ‘Great, I can get my flat painted!’ I certainly didn’t think it would be so much fun and that I’d still be enjoying it after all this time.
(edit)
Jackie: (on the popularity of her "Neighbours" character, Susan) People like to look at you as their mum. Teenagers, especially, come up to me and say things like, ‘Guess what? My boyfriend did this…’ and then tell me their problems.
(edit)
Jackie: (on her character‘s journey throughout "Neighbours") It’s something I’d wished for, for a long time. I wouldn’t be interested in playing someone who’s just a wife and mother. I think as I’ve got older, the stories have had to reflect what a woman of my age would go through. But I’ve always resisted her in any way being weak. She’s raised a bunch of kids, her husband, Alex, died, and her first husband is a philanderer, so she’s a tough bird, really!
