James Cromwell is the son of Kay Johnson (actress) and John Cromwell (actor/director), and stepson of Ruth Nelson(actress). He started his further education at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, studying mechanical engineering, but after spending a summer on the set with his father, he dropped out and joined the theatre. He spent ten years travelling the country and appeared in Chicago and LA amongst other cities. He began working in television in 1974, most notably as Stretch Cunningham on All in the Family. Inspite of director Blake Edwards once calling him a Useless entity as he did not like that he was so tall (6'7") he has had a busy career in both tv and movies. His most recent appearance being in Spiderman 3.
He is a vegan and supports a number of charities which campaign against animal cruelty.
