A rare example of an Asian-American leading man, James Shigeta was born in Hawaii of Japanese ancestry. After studying drama in New York, he won a talent contest as a singer, but took time off to serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Moving to Japan, he appeared in four Japanese musicals films and one of his recordings became the best selling record in Japan. Upon moving back to the US, he had several more successful recordings and made dramatic appearances in films such as "Walk Like a Dragon" and "Bridge to the Sun", prior to his big hit with the musical "Flower Drum Song". Over the last forty years he has remained active in his career, making dozens of film and TV appearances. Although often appearing in a supporting role, he never fails to bring dignity to any part he plays.
