Jane was the daughter of the Reverend George Austen, Rector of Steventon, Hampshire, in the south of England, and his wife Cassandra. Jane was born on December 16, 1775, and had six brothers (two of whom became admirals) and a sister.
Jane never married. Instead, she devoted herself to all the pursuits of gentility, and especially to reading and writing. For her whole life she lived with her family and died in her early forties, in 1817.
All of Jane's major books have been turned into movies or television serials, most of them several times. The books are: Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), Northanger Abbey (1818) and Persuasion (1818).
