American actor Jay Harrington, more popularly known as Ted Crisp on the ABC sitcom Better Off Ted, was born and raised in Massachusetts. Growing up, Jay used to spend his summers on Cape Cod, where due to the lack of sports and leisure activities in the area, he got involved with the Harwich Junior Theatre College near his folks' summer house. With continued interest in the performing arts, Harrington went on to study theater at Syracuse University where he started to act professionally. After graduating, Jay stayed in New York City for several years doing mainly theater work before eventually moving to Los Angeles, California for opportunities in film and on television.
In 1998, he made his film debut in an unreleased comedy called Enough Already and followed that up with guest appearances on Pacific Blue and The Pretender. After a spate of television guest roles and minor parts in more popular films like Anywhere But Here (Susan Sarandon, Natalie Portman) and Whatever It Takes (Shane West, Jodi Lyn O'Keefe), Harrington landed the recurring role of Theodore "Teddy" Blumenthal on Lifetime Channel's police drama The Division. After a season on the show, he was hired by NBC to star in the US comedy, Coupling, which failed to match the popularity of its British counterpart and got canceled after airing a few episodes.
However, Harrington would continue to become a very busy man playing series regular or recurring characters on various prime-time TV shows, with occasional gigs in feature films and made-for-TV movies. His memorable roles on TV included Dr. Simon O'Keefe on the WB family drama Summerland, FBI Special Agent Paul Ryan on FOX's short-lived crime drama The Inside, and Dr. Ron McCready, a Sacred Heart Hospital surgeon and love interest of Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher) in the second season of Desperate Housewives. On Private Practice, Jay put on his white coat once more as Dr. Wyatt Lockhart, an oncologist for Pacific Wellcare, competition to Oceanside Wellness Group, run by Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh), with whom he had an affair. In 2009, Harrington got another shot at showcasing his comedic chops, this time as an employee of the "morally questionable" company Veridian Dynamics on Better Off Ted.
