Jefferson Airplane in 1973 included Jack Casady, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Grace Slick, Papa John Creach, John Barbata, and David Freiberg.

When Jack and Jorma decided to be Hot Tuna full time, the others formed Jefferson Starship, adding Pete Sears and Craig Chaquico. Their first release was Dragon Fly in 1974. Marty Balin sang one song on that album and then re-joined his former Airplane bandmates.

Jefferson Starship became Starship in 1985 and got their first #1 hit with "We Built This City."

Jefferson Starship then re-grouped with original members Paul Kantner and Marty Balin.
