Jennifer Ehle is the only child of the American writer John Ehle and the English actress Rosemary Harris. While growing up in a theatrical household, she went to eighteen different schools, including the North Carolina School of the Arts and several in England, then trained for an acting career at the Central School of Speech and Drama, London.
Her first screen role was in The Camomile Lawn, in which she and her mother played the leading female character, Calypso, at different ages.
Off screen, Ehle has also taken roles in Royal Shakespeare Company productions, in London's West End, and on Broadway.
She married the American writer Michael Ryan at Portree, Scotland, in November 2001, and they are now based in upstate New York and Los Angeles. They have one son, called George.
