Something Wicked This Way Comes

Episode Number: 45    Season Num: 2    First Aired: Friday April 22, 2005    Prod Code: 222
God tells Joan that her last two years were just practice for her greatest challenge, which will be to face off against a mysterious man who, though he also talks to God, has a sinister agenda...

Initially, Joan is simply curious about Ryan Hunter, the charming, wealthy and influential man who revealed to her that he also speaks to God, and who rescued Adam from the woods during a storm. However, she soon discovers Ryan's dark side and is alarmed that he's insinuated himself into the lives of her loved ones, who are quick to dismiss Joan's qualms about him.

Notes

add »
Friedman's first name was never revealed in the series. (edit)
Of all the different Gods on the series, Kris Lemche (Cute Boy God) and Jeffrey Licon (Goth Kid God) appeared in the most episodes, nine in total. Coincidentally, they were also the first and last Gods seen on the series respectively. (edit)
Amber Tamblyn (Joan), Joe Mantegna (Will), Mary Steenburgen (Helen) and Michael Welch (Luke) are the only actors to appear in every episode of the series. In second place are Jason Ritter (Kevin), Christopher Marquette (Adam), and Becky Wahlstrom (Grace), who all appeared in 44 of the 45 episodes of the series. Ritter did not appear in "Trial and Error"; Marquette and Wahlstrom did not appear in "Pilot." (edit)
Of the 45 episodes of the series, Aaron Himelstein (Friedman) appeared in 33 of them, more than any other guest star. (edit)
David Burke (Father Ken Mallory) is the only actor, besides the regulars, to appear in both the final episode and the first, "Pilot". (edit)

Quotes

Judith's Ghost: (popping up out of nowhere, as Joan looks over pictures of Helen and Will) Now you're getting warm, Jo-Jo. A cop and an artist. An avenger and a visionary. What kind of kid did you think they'd have?
Joan: Okay, can you stop showing up like that? I mean, I miss you, but it freaks me out because none of my other friends are dead.
Judith's Ghost: Losers. (edit)
Joan: Explain the electromagnetic spectrum to me.
Luke: No.
Joan: Luke, it's not for class. It's personal.
Luke: You have personal issues with the electromagnetic spectrum? (edit)
Ryan: I have the dubious distinction of being independently wealthy.
Will: I always meant to do that. (edit)
Helen: I don't know if this makes sense, but I see things that aren't there. Except they are. And then sometimes they happen.
Lily: Yes. We call that 'crazy'. (edit)
Helen: Is there anything this could be, other than 'I'm having a breakdown'?
Lily: You could be possessed, but, you know, usually there's more foaming from the mouth. (edit)

Trivia

add »
Trivia: Judith looks gothed up after reappearing "head and shoulders only" through the door after talking to Joan. This is either a goof by the production staff or suggests that this is not Judith at all. (edit)
It's unavoidable from a real-life off-screen perspective, but...David Dorfman (Rocky) has clearly aged in a year and a half since the last time he appeared, and got some height. Do dead people get older and grow up in the afterlife? (edit)

Allusions

add »
Episode Title
The title of the episode is from Macbeth, Act IV, Scene 1, by Shakespeare. The quote also has been used for books and movies in the past, most notably, Ray Bradbury's book of the same title. (edit)
Joan: I have to show you to the other side? Go to the light?
Referencing the movie Poltergeist with similar dialogue. (edit)
Glynis: (Popular science) is like the Maroon 5 of physics.
Referencing the pop band and recent winners of the "Best New Artist" Grammy. (edit)
