Kiefer Sutherland arrested for drunken driving

September 25, 2007 at 09:36:00 AM

24 star sets great example for drivers everywhere.

A hero on TV; a demon behind the wheel.

Kiefer Sutherland, who stars on the hit TV thriller 24 as a secret agent with nerves of steel, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving Tuesday, hours before he was due to be honored by a Canadian actors' union.

The arrest comes as the Canadian performer, 40, the son of actor Donald Sutherland, remains on probation for driving under the influence in a previous case that landed him in a court-ordered treatment program for alcohol abuse.

Los Angeles police said they stopped Sutherland's car near the boundaries of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood shortly after 1 a.m. after he was seen making an illegal U-turn.

A breath test found him to be over the legal blood-alcohol limit, and he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, a police spokeswoman said.

She said Sutherland was taken to the police station in Hollywood, where he posted $25,000 bail and was released. He is due to appear in court October 16.

No further details were available, but the celebrity news Web site TMZ.com quoted an unnamed police source as describing Sutherland as "cooperative and mellow" while in custody.

The arrest came hours before Sutherland, who spent much of his boyhood in Toronto, was to be honored by the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) at the residence of Canada's Consul General in Los Angeles.

An ACTRA spokeswoman said the awards ceremony would go on as planned but be closed to the media. A spokeswoman for the actor said he would attend, but she declined further comment.

In 2004, Sutherland was placed on five years probation, fined $500 and ordered into an alcohol treatment program after pleading no contest, the equivalent of a guilty plea in California, to DUI, a city attorney's spokesman said.

Assuming the arrest leads to formal charges, it would be up to the judge who handled Sutherland's previous case to decide if he violated probation. The same judge, Michael Sauer, sentenced celebrity socialite Paris Hilton to 45 days in jail for breaching her probation in a previous DUI case.

Sutherland last year earned an Emmy Award, US television's highest honor, for his role as the globe-trotting, terrorist-fighting agent Jack Bauer on 24, one of Fox network's top-rated shows.

Averaging 13.5 million viewers earlier this year, the show returns to the airwaves for its seventh season in January.

There was no official word from the network or producers of 24, but a source close to the series said Sutherland's arrest was not expected to affect production of the show.

Kiefer has taken responsibility for his actions. He wanted to ensure that the production of 24 was not interrupted. By doing this, he is going to have to serve more time. I know his actions were unacceptable. He has taken responsibility for his actions which is more than I can say for most actors or actresses in Hollywood.

Kiefer got pulled over and charged with DUI, not Jack Bauer. Yeah, he could afford to hire a driver and not put other people at risk when he drinks. Remember, though, Kiefer is human and not some god. As a human, he's bound to make mistakes, like all of us. He will have consequences to pay, as he should, but he should not be condemned for being human. Hey, Kiefer, I hate my job and I would be willing to be your designated driver! Contact me!

drek2,
That's assuming Jack would even _let_ himself get pulled over in the first place!

And Greedy_Smurf,
"Getting into character"? Aren't pumped-up driving games more than enough? At least you won't have to deal with hitting and/or killing a real person for the rest of your life!

Kiefer, we love ya, but don't do it again. We'll sic a real-life Jack Bauer on you if you do!

He's making serious coin, why doesn't he just get a driver?

Uh i think we're forgetting that he may be getting into character of an alcholic for the show.. To mingle like he did with heroin!!

it seems the hollywood police are really trying to prove that there's no exceptions for stars. kinda good imho.

Driving while actually impaired deserves a LONG jail sentence on the first offense. BUT, state limits for Breathalyzers are ridiculous. You are not impaired at .08. If you have ONE 1 oz shot and then drive 2 hours later you can still test positive. Most DUI's are a joke. The harshness of the law is meant to deter people from even having one drink but the truth is that the ones actually driving "Drunk" dont care in the first place.

I love Kiefer, but I'm tired of all this drunk driving. obviously the penalties and fines aren't working, people are still doing it anyway. if everybody who got a DUI got their licenses taken away for 5 yrs. minimum on their very first DUI or DWI offense, a lot less people would do it again after finally getting them back. driving is a privilege, not a right. luckily nobody got hurt in this situation, but often times somebody does.

Kiefer Sutherland: (being pulled over by the cops) Dam it!

I agree why cant these actors hire drivers it is not like they cant afford it that is just plan stupid
Posted 09/25/2007 7:29pm
He can afford a driver, so there is no reason he should be driving drunk and place other people's lives at risk. I hope they take his license away.

We see him every week as the invincible Jack Bauer. But what we have to realise is he's a man just like you or I and people make mistakes. That's what we do we wait in lines and make mistakes. But since he's in the public eye we jump all over him, if he was a regular Joe Six pack we wouldn't even bat an eyelash.

He deserves a much longer sentence than whatever he gets, due to celebrities having lighter sentences than the average law-breaker. How will I watch 24 if they can't film new episodes because he is in prison?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Posted 09/25/2007 3:06pm
I'm a huuuuuuge fan but that's not cool Kieffer.
Posted 09/25/2007 2:28pm
Impossible. Jack would have broke the cops neck and got away.
