The Trevi CollectionEpisode Number: 14 Season Num: 1 First Aired: Friday January 24, 1975 Prod Code: n/a |
A fashion industry spy falls to his death as Carl watches. This is the first in a series of strange deaths that seem to have a supernatural origin. Apparently Madame Trevi, a fashion designer, is using witchcraft to stop those who oppose her. Carl seeks the aid of a witches' coven and follows their advice. But that may be exactly the wrong thing to do, leaving Carl to confront an angry witch with a few trinkets and his wits...

Kolchak: Witchcraft, the black arts. In this enlightened day do rational people believe in the existence of witches? The answer proved to be a simple "yes."
(edit)
Vincenzo: Now look, Carl, have you been able to connect Murray Vernon with Mickey Patchek?
Kolchak: No. No, not yet. No, these hoods have spooked my stringers. They, they, they, they act like I got leprosy.
Vincenzo: You'd be better off. You'd be safer in a leper colony. (edit) Carl: Okay, how much is it?
Witch: There is no charge. A nominal contribution will be appreciated.
(Carl puts in a little money)
Witch: Not that nominal. (edit) Carl: Can you get up out of your chair and walk to the window? Can you make it?
Tony: (at the window) Now what do I do? Jump?
Carl: You want me to open the window for you? Look. Look, look down there in the street. See the guy leaning up against the car reading the newspaper?
Tony: Yeah…
Carl: Well, does he look like a scoutmaster to you?!?
Tony: Well, look, Carl. We can call the police; they’ll pick him up and shake him down.
Carl: On what charge? Slow reading in public? (edit) Carl: He gave me a deadline – with the accent on “dead."
Tony: Well, threats are the standard situation with newsmen, Carl. You know that. It goes with the territory like the high salary. (edit)

The conclusion to this episode is rather...badly edited. Carl sets down the mojo bag and one of the mannequins sweeps it off the table onto the floor. After his conversation with Madeleine, Carl's holding the mojo bag and starts wielding it. Then the mannequins come at him anyway and pile on him. Then he is no longer holding the mojo bag and is fumbling for it where it sits neatly on a table. Then he grabs the mojo bag and all the mannequins go inert on a pile on top of him. Then Carl climbs free and all the mannequins are standing back up as they were when he entered the room.

Kolchak: Yeah, yeah, floats like a butterfly...
Carl is quoting part of prizefighter Muhammed Ali's most famous tagline: "Floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee." It refered to the boxer's tactic of tiring opponents with footwork and then finishing them with fist work. (edit)
