Lars Ulrich was born in Gentofte, Denmark on December 26, 1963 to a upper-middle class family. In 1973, a nine year Lars went to a Deep Purple concert with his father and became mesmerized by the preformance. As a result of his new found interest in music, he recieved his first drum kit at age 13.
In 1981, Lars met James Hetfield in Downey, California and formed the thrash metal band Metallica. Ulrich's early work in Metallica led him to be dubbed as one of the thrash metal scenes greats.

He has been marries twice. His first marriage ended around 1990 during the making of the album 'Metallica'(or the black album). In 2004 he separated from his second wife of seven years. He has two sons named Myles (born August 5, 1998) and Layne (born May 6, 2001). Ulrich is currently dating Danish actress Connie Nielsen.
