After the daughter of one of Van Buren's college friends is found dead in her room, a suicide, Van Buren joins Green and Fontana in hunting down the man who burned her face with acid months earlier, ultimately leading to her suicide. Van Buren is unsuccessful in getting a lot of help from her friend, who is terrified that the man who destroyed her elder daughter's life with destroy her younger daughter as well. McCoy and Borgia's case hits a snag when Van Buren takes the stand and comes close to committing perjury to keep Jason Corley behind bars.

Personally, I loved the fact that we actually got to see a little bit of the personal side of Lieutenant Van Buren for once. The death of her college roommate's daughter let us know what we have all been suspecting for a very long time now - that she does have a soft side.
Now, that's not to say that she's never shown compassion, because she has, but it was never really anything that told us much about her character (unless I missed something somewhere along the line).
However, as happy as I was to see it, that annoying little voice in the back of my head opened its annoying little mouth yet again. Law and Order wasn't designed to focus on the detectives and their lives. It's supposed to be about the victims and their problems, not the ones of those investigating them. Supposedly, that's one of the appeals of Special Victims Unit, since the main characters on that show actually show some emotion from time to time. If this episode means that the enitre show is going downhill from here in that respect, then all sense of originality in the world of television programming will indeed be gone.
The bad guy was so creepy. hide show
I loved the ending. The little sister throwing vinegar in the bad guy's face was great. She showed him what her sister went thru when he did it to her. The guy's girlfriend was so stupid and pointless to the story. I liked the back story between the mother and Anita.

A girl is supposdely killed, but we soon learn that she had committed suicide, which I'm sure was brought on by depression because of the severe burn on a face. She told her mother that she was cleaning and she accidently splashed her face with detergent, but her mother learns later, that her ex boyfriend did it, but because of his threats on her younger daughter she did not pursue it.
The episode evolves with the victim's mother making a postive ID on the ex boyfriend, but because of fear, recants her statment to Van Buren, who dismisses it and encourages her friend to testify. This comes out in court and McCoy has to withdraw the charges because without a positive ID they had no case.
Van Buren sets up a stink to get Jason to confess to burning his ex, which he does, after the victims sister bursts through his door and splash him with vingear..
Overall, the episode tried to hard to get viewers interested in the storyline and in Van Buren's fight for justice which the own victim's mother was scared to do.

I love Law & Order in general, but the episodes that I really enjoy focus on one of the main characters. This is that type of episode. Seeing Van Buren's determination to get the man who scarred her friend's daughter and who is also terrorizing the family really shows depth to her character. Seeing Green's and Fontana's desire to get the bad guy shows their loyalty to Van Buren. They like to get the bad guys, no question, but it was someone who Van Buren cared about. This is a terrific episode, and it will stay with me a very long time.
