- Ben Stone: 'Recent jury studies show women need to separate themselves from the victim. They need to believe it could not happen to them. Therefore, women do not believe the victim.' This cheers me right up.
Stone is referring to the Belief in a Just World phenomenon. This is the tendency to evaluate recipients as fully deserving of the good or bad outcomes that befall them. This arises from the notion that in order to plan our activities and achieve our goals, we need to preserve the belief that the world is orderly and our actions have predictable consequences. The Just World phenomenon was first studied in a series of social psychology experiments by Melvin Lerner in the 1960s. edit » - This episode appears to be ripped from the headlines of an actual rape case at St. John's University in Collegeville, Jamaica, New York. Three lacrosse players at St. John's University stood trial for sexual assault against a then 21-year-old student from the Queens campus. Over a year later, on July 23, 1991, all three players were acquitted of the charges, causing an even bigger stir in the community.
