This award-winning family drama was based upon Laura Ingalls Wilder's 9-part series of autobiographical books. Television producer and NBC executive Ed Friendly became aware of this enduring story in the early 1970s. He asked Michael Landon to direct the pilot movie, who agreed on the condition that he could also play Charles Ingalls.

TIME: beginning in the 1870s.
PLACE: the American frontier - more specifically, Walnut Grove in the state of Minnesota.
THE CHARACTERS: Charles/Pa Ingalls: a homesteader farmer/woodworker; compassionate and loving, yet quick-tempered and ready to throw a defensive punch whenever necessary

Caroline/Ma Ingalls: Patient and understanding wife and mother; the ideal prairie woman Laura Ingalls Wilder: The winsome, tomboyish second daughter of Charles and Caroline, who serves as the voice of the entire series, and eventually married Almanzo Wilder

Mary Ingalls Kendall: Charles and Caroline's pretty and ultra-responsible oldest daughter, who longs to be a teacher and goes completely blind at the age of 15. She later marries Adam Kendall, although this is a fictional piece created just for the TV series

Carrie Ingalls: The cute third daughter of Charles and Caroline, who didn't have a large role but was always portrayed as a very sweet little girl

Grace Ingalls: Charles and Caroline's fifth and final child, who was only about 4 when her role in the series ended

Jack: the loyal, lovable family dog, who was replaced by Bandit when he died in Season 4.

Albert Quinn Ingalls: The fictional adopted son of Charles and Caroline--an orphaned runaway whom the Ingalls meet while living temporarily in Winoka

  Since we have so many "newbies" here (and since the question has never been posted as a thread), name your most and least favorite "Little House" character.  Try to name just one of each!  Regulars, bit players, and one-hit wonders are fair game.  And justify your answer! Most favorite:  Nels Oleson.  An all-around great guy; he just ruled whenever he would let his wife have it. Least favorite:  Mr. Montague.  An annoying, unnecessary, and just-too-weird addition to the cast.  less «

  If you love Little House on The Prairie like I do, BOYCOTT HALLMARK CHANNEL UNTIL THEY AGREE TO PUT IT BACK!!!!!!!! I didn't seem to mind when they took one hour off of LHOTP in January to put I Love Lucy on, because I Love Lucy is a memorable and wonderful show. I was happy when they put the hour back a few weeks later. I was a bit perturbed when they took the hour off again in February to put Golden Girls on. Don't get me wrong, I love Golden Girls alot! I have all the DVDs, watched it on Lifetime, but it's just not a Hallmark-y kind of show! Like LHOTP, Highway to Heaven, The Waltons, 7th heaven, Murder She Wrote, etc. But this morning I was stark raving MAD!! they took it off completely! Not to be on until Saturday, April 18th, and that's the only time in April! I loved Hallmark Channel. Their meaningful family-oriented dramas, and heart-wrenching movies, but when they take the good stuff off (Not saying that Golden Girls isn't good, M*A*S*H is good too, but do they need to have it on so much during the day?) like the Waltons, LHOTP etc. .. . Then I tend to BOYCOTT HALLMARK!! ARE YA WITH ME LITTLE HOUSE LOVERS???? Where's Pa? Ma? Laura, Mary and Carrie and even Harriet, Nellie, Willie and Nancy? HALLMARK STOLE THEM FROM US!!!!!! less «

  95% of what you see on the show never happened! hide « show »

  As a youngster, I used to love watching this show. However, over the years growing up, I have read absolutely every thing I can get my hands on about Laura Ingalls Wilder and I cant even watch the program now because 95% of what you see on this show NEVER HAPPENED! There was no Albert. Mary was never bitter over losing her sight, never taught school, got married, much less had a child. Mr. Edwards didn't live in MN (or get married there) By the time Laura was married they lived in South Dakota. Laura and Almanzo never adopted his brother's daughter. There was no Nancy Olsen. Laura did not teach school after she was married. Almanzo didnt call Laura "Beth" it was "Bess or Bessie". I could go on and on but for a fan of Mrs. Wilder, I cant bear to watch it at all. Even the movie that was made a few years ago, I'm thinking it was called "The real Laura Ingalls Wilder" was so far from the truth I was disgusted. I only gave it a 3 insted of a 1 because it is good wholesome family entertainment but children beware...READ and learn the FACTS!!!!!

  Jesse and Frank James decide to hide out in Walnut Grove. Terror ensues for the townspeople, but hilarity ensues for those of us watching this silly, yet fun episode of LHOTP. hide « show »

  The shark began to circle the waters in this ridiculous Season 4 offering, but it's all in good fun and still manages to keep the viewer's interest. Um...so Miss Beadle just HAPPENS to give out an assignment on the Civil War (as Pa manages to note is "only 11 years ago so feelings are still raw" in order to remind us of the time period), so the James Brothers just HAPPEN to come to Walnut Grove (which works out perfectly for the North/South debate), and one of the students who is for the North (and opposes Mary's sympathy for the atrocities done to the South) just HAPPENS to shoot Jesse James 6 years later (he's Ford, LOL)! Wow, what a coincidence! I think the funniest moment for me was when Charles swims underwater while a bouty hunter is sealing off the town. Ludicrous but still entertaining.

  Hello! Little House On The Prairie is my all time favorite television show of like all time and has so many great things about it. The characters all have so much personality and uniqueness to them. It truly amazes me. The characters are so great; I do not even have a favorite. Also, the plot is very good for majority of the episodes. My friend used to hate it but now, she to loves it. Little house on the prairie is the best show ever and it is based on the series of books by my favorite author! The cast does a stupendous job and I absolutely love this show.

  I'm so happy they brought this show to Hallmark. I love it when I have the day off from work and I can lay on the couch and watch the Ingalls! It's such a heartfelt and inspiring show that people can't help falling in love with. I grew up watching this show and hope to pass it on to my children some day. I was devasted when Michael Landon passed away, he was one of my favorites on the show. I wanted to spend at least one day in the Ingalls house and sleep in the loft. That looked like so much fun!

  I have the complete series on DVD... hide « show »

  When I was 11, I was totally obsessed with Little House on the Prairie, so for Christmas that year, my folks got me the complete series on DVD. But in September of that same year, I had discovered Naruto which led me to discover more anime, so I unintentionally forgot all about Little House. I still love anime more than ever, but I have recently rekindled my love fo Little House as well. I watch it a lot in the mornings on the Hallmark Channel, and occasionally in the afternoons when I'm waiting for M*A*S*H to come on. I think my favorite would have to be either Adam, even though his character never existed in reality, or Mr. Oleson, just because I sympathize with him. I've always hated Mrs. Oleson, just because she's evil and will never change. Nellie was a brat at first, but she shaped up after she married Percival, who I also adore. Willie was sort of a brat, but really just a typical little boy. But he got really handsome when he got into his teen years, and unfortunately for me got married... T_T But the guy who plays him is almost 40 now. YUCK! I don't date old people.
