Episode Summary

When several boxers appear to have powers far beyond those of mortal men, Lois and Clark investigate- only to discover that the man making it all possible is Lois's estranged father Dr. Sam Lane, who is a legend in the world of sports medicine.

  •
    3.7 Bad

What seems like a good storyline turns into a pretty dismal episode with hardly anything happening except Lois meeting her father and investigating boxers with high strength and superman getting hurt then easily beating them hide show

Very forgettable episode in which the enemys were easily beatable (something that hsppens on Lois & Clark a lot) very lame acting from the guest stars with the two main stars trying to make this episode acceptable Season 1 continues to go down on a slow spiral to a heap of rubbish

  • In the opening scene, Clark is playing baseball by himself. He pitches and catches right-handed but bats left-handed. []
  • Albert Chow's name gets changed to Arthur Chow in the "Illusions of Grandeur" episode. Mr Chow is the second richest man in the world, while Lex is the third. []
  • Tracy Scroggins, K Callan and Eddie Jones do not appear in this episode. []
  • Matt Roe plays a character named Max Menken. Long time Superman buffs will remember the name Max Menken from the 1966 Broadway musical, It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman. In the play, Max is one of the chief bad guys: a jealous Planet reporter who was portrayed by the veteran show biz personality Jack Cassidy in the original production. []
  • Currently in the comics, Lois' father Sam is a high ranking military man. When originally introduced in the 1960's, Sam and his wife were a farm couple in the small town of Pittsdale, very like the Kents. []
More Notes
  • Lois: Have you ever met anybody who's so wrapped up in their work they don't have time for anyone or anything?
Clark: Is this a trick question? []
  • Lex: (speaking to self in mirror) It's alway such an embarrassment, having to do away with someone. It's like announcing to the world that you lack the savvy and the finesse to deal with the problem more creatively. I mean, there have been times, naturally, when I've had to have people eliminated, but it always... (sigh) saddened me. I've always felt like I've let myself down somehow. []
  • Clark: Sometimes a piece runs dry, chief. You know that.
Perry: Oh, well, that's just great, Kent. We'll put that up on billboards all over the city: 'Lane and Kent come up with squat! On sale at your newsstands now.' []

Allusions

  • Perry: Let Metropolis know that Lane and Kent are the greatest writing team since Woodward and Bernstein.

Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward were the reporters who broke the 1972 story of the Watergate break-in, eventually leading to the resignation of US President Richard Nixon. Their paper, The Washington Post, was subsequently awarded the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for public service. []
  • Lois: I'm Dr. Frankenstein's daughter.

This is a reference to the book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. In the story, a scientist uses dead body parts to create a new and (supposedly) better man. The creation ends up turning into a monster. []
