  • Amazing Journeys is a documentary from 1999 where filmmaker George Casey follows the migrations of six species including butterflies, crabs and humans. In Michoacan, Mexico, monarch butterflies are preparing for their migratory trek which happens once every fourth generation. On Christmas Island, each December, more than 100 million red crabs journey to the sea where females lay eggs. Their migration takes them through the town, and homes and yards of residents. On the island, crab crossing signs are posted and some red crabs actually camp out in a kitchen for a short time. (The locals are used to this custom and completely accept it.) The migration of humans is shown in the Masai people of East Africa, a semi-nomadic tribe. Birds, gray whales and zebras are also featured in the film. In addition to stunning scenery, the film explores how migrations happen and explains echo-location, magnetic fields, and learned patterns in the species.moreless
