  • American Me is a gritty character drama about Mexican gang life written and directed by Edward James Olmos ("Battlestar Galactica"). Santana Montoya (Edward James Olmos) grows up among the tough street gangs of East Los Angeles. He eventually lands in prison and spends the next 18 years serving hard time at Folsom Prison where he joins the Latino drug operation behinds bars. Over time, he becomes the leader of the violent and powerful prison gang. But once he gets parole, Santana wants to leave the criminal life behind and returns to his old neighborhood. He takes a menial job and even meets a woman, Julie (Evelina Fernandez), who accepts his past. Yet, Santa struggles to fit in with civilian life. The local Mexican mafia, as well as his family and friends, pressure him to return to gangster lifestyle. The brutal violence, sexual content and graphic drug use make this 1992 film best suited to mature audiences.moreless
