  • Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker meshes the classic world of Batman the Animated Series with the new futuristic version found in Batman Beyond. The Batman Beyond universe takes place in the not-too-distant future where Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy) has aged to an extent that donning the mantle of the bat has become an extreme physical burden. In such a decrepit state, the legacy of Batman is near its end with Bruce Wayne unable to continue fighting crime. Fortunately, Mr. Wayne crosses paths with Terry McGinnis (Will Friedle), a high school student, whom through a series of events, ends up inheriting the Batman's mantle. Though society has strived greatly in technology from the classical Batman era, society is still plagued by criminals armed with space aged weaponry as well as super powered villains, which the Batman inevitably encounters such as the Jokerz. The Jokerz are a gang whose name and ensemble pay homage to the original joker from the past. Much like the title suggests, the Joker (Mark Hamill) returns from the past and claims control of his newly devoted minions to terrorize Neo-Gothem. As the chaos ensues, the argument of whether or not the Joker is genuine prompts Mr. Wayne to reveal painful accounts from his past to prepare McGinnis for his upcoming bout with the Joker. McGinnis ultimately faces the question plagued by all heroes; "Am I capable of ending it for good?" and "Would I still be considered good?"moreless

    • Terry: The only reason you kept coming back was because you couldn't get a laugh out of the old man.
      Joker: I'm not hearing this.
Terry: Get a clue, Clowny. He's got no sense of humor. He wouldn't know a good joke if it bit him in the cape. Not that you ever had a good joke.
      Joker: Shut up. Shut up!
Terry: I mean, joy buzzers, squirting flowers, lame! Where's the A material? Make a face, drop your pants, something!
      Joker: Show yourself!
Terry: You make laugh. But only because I think you're kinda pathetic. (Starts laughing)
      Joker: Stop that!
Terry: So you fell in a tank of acid, got your skin bleached, and decided to become a super villain. What? You couldn't get work as a rodeo clown? (Continues laughing)
Joker: Don't you dare laugh at me!
Terry: (Laughs harder) Why? I thought the Joker always wanted to make Batman laugh.
      Joker: You're not Batman!

    • Joker: What's the matter, Batman? No witty comeback? No threat? Then I'll apply the narration. (A film plays with the words "Our Family Memories" on it. Then shows Joker in a lab coat, standing next to a table with different tools on it) I'll begin with how I peeled back the layers of the boy's mind. (Film shows Robin strapped to a table) Oh, he bravely tried to fight it at first. (Cut to Joker next to a BBQ and pulls out to large wires from them and attaches them to the table Robin is strapped to) You would've been proud to see him so strong. (Joker flips a switch and Robin is electrocuted while Batman looks in shock) But all too soon the syrups and the shocks took their toll. And the dear lad began to share such secrets with me. Secrets that are mine alone to know, Bruce. It's true, Batsy. I know everything. I kinda like the kid who peaks at his Christmas presents, I must admit, it's sadly anticlimactic. Behind all the stern and batter-rangs, you're just a little boy in a playsuit, crying for mommy and daddy. It would funny if it wasn't so pathetic. Oh, what the heck, I'll laugh anyway. (Lets out a huge laugh)

    Notes (1)

    • The scene where Joker takes care of Bonk has two versions. In the cut version, Joker sprays him with his Joker venom that leaves him smiling and is removed from the the gang. However, in the uncut version, Joker kills him outright with the trick flag gun.
