Written and directed by Richard Brooks, Bite the Bullet is a 1975 American Western film starring Gene Hackman, Candice Bergen, and James Coburn. Based on actual events, the film tells the story of a 700-mile cross-country horse race that took place in 1906. 9 different contestants competed to win, but each has their own reason for doing so. Two former Rough Riders (Hackman and Coburn), a Mexican with a toothache (Mario Arteaga), an Englishman (Ian Bannen), a reckless kid named Carbo (Jan-Michael Vincent), a lady of ill repute (Bergen), a cowhand struggling with his health (Ben Johnson), and a wealthy business man (Dabney Coleman) all being the race with expectations of winning, though many find that they cannot make it. While at first each of the racers respects each other, as the end becomes closer their feelings of distrust grow stronger. Bite the Bullet was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Music and Best Sound.moreless
