  • Black Girl is a drama, released in 1966, which tells the story of a young Sengalese woman, Diouana, (Mbissine Therese Diop) who decides to travel abroad in order to seek a better life. She finds employment working as a governess for a rich French family, but on a trip to the French Riviera her white mistress (Anne-Marie Jelinek) starts to change the way she treats Diouana, expecting her to work as a maid instead of as a governess. Her hopes for a better life in France begin to falter, and she falls into a state of despair. Her mistress treats her as though she is an object, and this increases Diouana's feeling of isolation in the strange new country. This carefully modulated drama is a strong commentary on the psychological and emotional impacts of racism. The first feature film from director Ousmane Semb''ne is a must see and will not leave audiences disappointed.moreless
