  • Bye Bye Birdie is a 1963 musical comedy directed by George Sidney. When fictional rock legend Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson) gets drafted int the army, teenage girls around the country take to the streets in protest. Albert F. Peterson (Dick Van Dyke) is also unhappy about the situation. Albert depends on Conrad to support himself and his aging vaudevillian mother Mama Mae Peterson (Maureen Stapleton). When Albert's secretary Rosie DeLeon (Janet Leigh) cooks up the idea for a national contest with the winner getting a farewell kiss from Conrad on the Ed Sullivan Show, Albert jumps at the chance. With the winner, Kim MacAfee (Ann-Margret) chosen, the entire entourage moves to Sweet Apple, OH. Soon after, the prospect of a teen idol romance between Kim and Conrad goes awry when Kim's father, Harry McAfee (Paul Lynde) and jealous boyfriend, Bobby Rydell (Hugo Peabody) try to put a stop to the onstage kiss.moreless
