  • movie Description
  • Carmel by Israeli filmmaker Amos Gitai is a carefully composed mix of collective and personal memories that connect the Jewish past with the Israeli present. In the film, Gitai struggles with Israel's reality and the "endless war" that his son is now engaged in fighting. Gitai's life is intertwined with the history of the war-torn country. While the weapons have changed over the past 2,000 years, Gitai's sorrow and frustration demonstrate that the same savagery exists today. This internal stream of consciousness is an expression of the filmmakers anguish with living in a country in a continual state of war. The film also presents the dichotomy of letters from Gitai's mother written during her travels. The letters bring forth a sense of a warmhearted, cosmopolitan woman filled with the love for her family. Photographs included in the film reveal a close-knit family that is seemingly unaffected by the war surrounding them.moreless
