  • City After Midnight is a thrilling British crime drama filmed in Surrey, England in 1957. The French coastal town of La Bandelette is shaken after several brazen robberies are reported on the quiet street of Rue des Anges. Antiques dealer Sir Maurice Lawes (Wilfrid Hyde-White) inadvertently witnesses the brutal killing of a gendarme while looking out his window one night, and he is spotted by the murderer as they make their escape. Maurice's daughter, Janice (Petula Clark), pays him a visit the next evening only to find he, too, has been murdered. A private insurance investigator, Detective Dermot Kinross (Dan O'Herlihy), and the local police quickly become involved to solve this tragic mystery, and their investigation takes a surprising twist as they soon realize more than a few people had a motive to kill Maurice. City After Midnight is alternately titled "That Woman Opposite" in the UK, and is based on John Dickson Carr's 1942 mystery novel, "The Emperor's Snuff-Box."moreless
